Been searching for accommodation for forthcoming hols in States and have found what I'm looking for. Only thing is that I will be renting direct from the owner (no agent/management company/whatever involved). Good side to this is that the price is competitive.....downside is that I'm wondering what I should/can do to ensure that everything is kosher....

Have googled the renter's name and got a result.

Have Google Earth'd for the address and the property certainly seems to exist

Any other useful suggestions...???

(internet is a wonderful thing but it sure makes you suspicious....)

Do they rent it out regularly? If so then ask for someone you can get a referral from.

My uncle does just this management company that used to look after it were crap and costing a fortune so over time he met ex-pats doing various jobs - pool cleaning gardening house cleaning and the like and now uses them to look after the place while hes not there. I would have thought it would be something like this, have you saw pictures or a dvd or something of the villa?

Thanks for the input and I'm sure you're right.

Oh yes, seen pictures and specification etc. And I don't have a problem with, and fully understand people doing it themselves...I'm just looking for reassurance that I'm not gonna be ripped off! Have rented plenty of places in the past but they've tended to be either by recommendation or friend of a friend etc.

As I say, I think I'm just suffering from internetparanoia.......

Renting direct from the owner? I didnt realise there was another way, i've been doing it for years and years. Recently booked a house just north of Rome for a fortnight in August, off the internet, pre internet used to rent from the small ads in Daltons or Exchange & Mart. Never had any problems, and it must be something we've been doing for twenty odd years. Mind you, never ever used any sort of organisation for any type of holiday, never even so much as set foot in a travel agents, we always do everything by booking directly ourselves, hotels, flights etc, its so bloody easy that way. I reckon the only difference is that if you DIY and it goes wrong, Watchdog and the local paper wont be interested in your story.
