Motorcycle ride round britain - ideas?
Discussion
Going to take a few weeks of work soon to ride the engine-on-wheels round the UK. Never really been that far up north or down south (been stuck mainly in the middle - Berkshire!).
So if I was going to ride upwards from London, round the top, then back via ireland and wales, what are the good places to go and see?
Cheers

Looking to book 2 weeks (maybe 3 in May time). I want to spend at least 5 days in Scotland as I dont want to rush it (never been there), I want to spend at least 2 days in wales (lovely place but dont like the idea of all the scameras), and then I have 7 days to play with should I discover something more intesting, or just want to go off the planned route.

You think? How long should I reserve for scotland? I want to spend the majority of the time there to be honest as never been there and is exactly what I need (out in the middle of nowhere in places
) What are the cities like or is it best to stay out of them?
Personally I'm quite fond of Edinburgh & SWMBO has a liking for Glasgow, but for a motoring hol I'd avoid both as far as possible. Given a bit of time I could quite easily come up with a 10 day taster of superb runs in the western highlands and more accessible islands, and still miss out loads, the country really has no competitors with it's combination of jaw dropping scenery and superb driving.
Pop on to the Scotland regional forum on PH - loads of folks have asked for route ideas and there are quite a few good responses. Once you get north/west of the Great Glen, you'll hardly meet another car/bike, let alone a scamera! It's a great feeling to see a road snaking out ahead for miles through some of the glens, good tarmac, great scenery and not another soul in sight. In terms of cities, Edinburgh's nice, Aberdeen's nice, Dundee is best avoided...ditto Glasgow unless you restrict yourself just to the city centre which has some fine victorian buildings and is quite OK really. Depending on the time of year you will either get wet or bitten by midges. Check out the Knockhill web site, as you might be able to fit in a bike track day too
And as for an interesting route up, the A68 is hard to beat. Fabulous road into Scotland apart from very frequent cameras on the Scottish side (none on the English side) and too many tourists - so go early or late in the day and keep an eye out.
But if you do get good weather, the roads and scenery in the north and west of Scotland really are second to none - anywhere.

This petrolhead's site is worth a look www.stevecarter.com/bestuk.htm for an interesting route through some lovely scenery. Has some great photography too.
