had two weeks in florida working on various things, and i'm pretty cheesed off to be coming back to the UK in the first place, but on landing i discover the war between my staff was worse than I first thought.

why cant people just along?

the first issue this morning after landing is sorting BT - or more to the point plugging in the phone system to the new external line and testing it. i mean - how hard can it be take the s*dding black wire and put it in the new line and test it ffs. and the person who was unable to do this is asking for a payrise because they feel exploited. its a f******* telephone line - how difficult is that?!??

grrrr

"hello USAirways, i want a ticket out of the UK for tomorrow morning"

I had initiative once, and I got sacked for it. These days people are frightened to employ me, because I might have initiative and that would make too many people look bad.

I say.... Blooming managers, you can't live with 'em...... you cant live with 'em.

Hope you had a great time in Florida, not that I'd know what it's like there. I'm not a manager!

A lesson I learned many years ago is that you judge a manager on how well their company/dep't runs when they're not there. As such, seems to me that you need a strong / assertive number two who will get things done in your absense.

In my experience in maagement there are 4 type of employee:

1) Unpleasant people who are not performers.
2) Performers who are a pain in the neck to deal with.
3) Nice people who are not performers.
4) Nice people who are performers.

In terms of dealing with these:

1) Get rid of them ASAP - they never change and can be like a cancer in the company.
2) These people sometimes change, but more often than not they don't - get rid of those who don't.
3) These hardly ever change, and the tendency is to give them chance after chance. But, you need to get rid of them.
4) You work damned hard to keep these people. Getting rid of the 1's, 2's, and 3's helps to keep the 4's.

Head of the queue for (1) here!

Edited to add;

What happens when one find's that one is the only Number 4?

That would be category 5 (delusional employees) - you get rid of these, but they still think they work for you!

Surely it depends.....

If you're looking inward, then I'd have thought one should be pretty accomodating. If you're looking outward, then that mean streak could well come in handy. If you're nasty to your own, and nice to everyone else (and I've worked places that are like that) you're sure to get used.

I'd have thought that one wants to be nice to clients, but there are plenty of outward relationships that aren't client based. On the other hand it's not at all unheard of to have a client that you've treated well to turn around and screw you.

If you're inwardly nasty then surely you're destroying the fertile grounds that you're trying to sustain yourself by.

I don't know, I've not been there, but I've often thought about the difficulty of owning a small-middle sized company, and employees must be quite a responsibility. It's quite difficult to fire them, the good ones leave at will, and all too easy to get lots of unproductive ones. Once you have the company, you can't easily destroy it, if everything goes to rats, because you have lots of dependancies. The only obvious way out is to sell, and you can only sell if things are going well.

I'm always interested in business ideas, and I'm always looking at the way in which companies are run, and it strikes me that some of the most successful businesses are those where the central idea is owned, and all of the actual productive work is outsourced. You can chop and change your workforce with the times.

The trouble is though, that as an idea, it doesn't put the "Great" in Britain. If we live in a crap country it's our own fault.

not sure i agree with you totally.

if you have to perform at 100% to survive then surely you are bordering on living beyond on your own means? if you perform at under 100% then you'll end up with a life of regret, or at least thats how i keep myself motivated...

"Yeah. Don't go to England!"
