My wife and I, like many millions of parents, love our kids dearly. However, on the odd occasion we've had to administer a slap on the hand. Let me give an example: when one of our kids was four or five she got into the habit of flicking her food at the dinner table. We said 'no' - she did it again. We said 'no' a second time, but she did it again. After the third occasion we said 'if you do that again, you'll get a smack'. She did, so she got a slap on the wrist, followed by a cuddle and we explained why we had to smack her - because she refused to listen to our instruction. She's never done it since, and is a very well behaved child.

Now the above is the moral boundaries which we believe are correct. Other parents have other boundaries and that's their prerogative. What I seriously object to is interfering, politically correct, busy bodies (who may well have been beaten as kids) pushing their morality and boundaries onto my family. In essence, 'good' parents who love and discipline their kids are being called 'bad' parents. We all know parents who let their kids ride rough-shot over every boundary and instruction - and we all know that such kids will probably grow up with major problems. However, if legislation is introduced which interferes / criminalises the odd smack, when a child has crossed a boundary several times and doesn't listen to instruction, then I predict that the chav infected society is set to increase over the coming years.

If the powers that be believe that interfering with parents choices on raising youngsters then they should ban divorce - which has a FAR greater (negative) impact on children. Of course they (rightly) won't, because it's none of their damn business.

The law makes no difference... people do what they think is right and don't do what they think is wrong.

There was an interesting program on BBC2 last night entitled "The Romantics" about the birth of the idea of individual "freedom". Do we really have any?

Man is born free and then enchained.

So, what's going to happen, then? Is a child going to go to the police with a complaint?

More nonsense.

When Little Trackside was younger, she got three warnings not to do something. If she carried on after the 3rd warning, she was smacked, no hug or nurturing afterwards. I feel no guilt for that, and do not feel my child has been damaged by my "violent" method of bringing her up.

If I had more children (which I don't plan on happening, but if it did) I would smack that/those child(ren) too, law or no law.

I don't have any children, but if I did I would smack them if they were in the wrong. I was smacked & I learned my lesson if I had done something naughty.

Children these days have little respect, & seem to have a total free rein. They seem to rule the parents, & the parents are anything for a quiet life attitude!

It's good to hear that that there are still parents out there who do have control over their off spring. Keep up the good work, as they are going to be the next generation who hopefully wont be of the troubled variety on the streets!

And now you have to pay good money for that kind of thing. Kids just don't know they're born do they?

Totally agree with smacking. I know people who have never been smacked and they are all immature brats. I got smacked myself and I would smack my kids whether or not it was ileagal. I know this sounds like I'm going too far, but I think a lot of the problems in society are caused by parents not smacking their children.
"But I'll make him/her hate me" they say. No they won't, I don't hate my parents. Do people hate the Police and Justice system because they send people to jail? No.

This is about power perceived. The government have no way to enforce such laws so why would they pass them? It's hard enough to get a conviction when a man stabs you in the face with a bottle and you are left blind in one eye so what exactly do they prpose to do to a person that's slapped their child in a fit of desperation?

" what happened then little johnny?"

"well i thought the chochlates on the shelf wanted a swim so i put them in with the fishes and then mum slapped me "

" and you say this was in aisle 7 of the farmers supermarket at 13:15 hrs?"

"errr, can i play with that doggy?"

I wonder how many paedophiles will still be on the teachers payroll this time next year?

Srebbe missed the more sinister aspect to what these "Commissioners" plan. The ban on smacking, they say, will "clear the ground" for more Government support for parents to help them discipline their children. In other words, they're to remove our right to deploy an effective tactic which works for free, so they can then come and tell us about less effective tactics for which we will, through taxes have to pay.

Everything about this Govenment comes back to the same old Socialist doctrine - create problems so that they can then be seen to provide solutions. It's nightmarish insanity. Evil, utterly evil people.

There is a very modern phenomenon where children reach adulthood without ever having been challenged. The false understanding of humanity this creats means that in later life they are in great danger. If I walk into a bar where I am not welcome there is a fair chance I might get out without a scratch. I have seen youngsters get the shit kicked out of them because they did not have the common sense to keep their gob shut. It is a safety thing really. In the same way as an apprentice sheetmetalworker gets lots of minor cuts on their hands in the first few weeks of training which equips them with the mental ability to be bloody careful in future. A swift smack occasionally, equips a child to understand that there are limits to peoples tollerance (or tollerisation to use Blair speak).

I really don't understand this country any more. The people elected to govern this country are supposed to be intelligent people. Why is that they can never see beyond their bloody noses.

When I was a child, discipline was a 3 pronged attack. There was the Police, who gave you a clip if you was cheeky, Teachers who would cane you or give you the slipper, and the ultimate responsibility was that of your parents who would smack you if you mis-behaved. Was there a stabbing every 5 mins, or a car broken into at the rate there is now? No. Why? Simple ....discipline. Discipline=Respect.

Get the police to follow up more crimes, corner the runts who don't give a shit about peoples property and give them a kicking. Job done.
Let the teachers have their cane's back. Strike relentlessly at the runts who disrupt class. Job done
Parents, reel your kids back in and show them respect. Don't give in 'cos its easier. If it takes a smack to get their respect then so be it.

I am speaking from experience. I have a daughter who had her moments and got a smack when deserved. There was no cuddle after a smack, but there was always an explanation as to why she got a smack. The end result is a loverly, well balanced 19 year old, who knows right from wrong.

It really is time these do-gooders took their heads out their arses!

I only got one smack when I was a kid - I must have been really bad because mum and dad NEVER smacked me...whatever it was I did...never did it again..

But then again one look from my dad and I was as good as gold again...

Smacking shouldn't be banned...next thing to go with be cuddling because thet might *interfer* with a child.

I have to say that I don't have kids, but if I ever do then they will be allowed a free reign to make their own mistakes and learn from them. I'm not going to be one of these people who constantly tells their kids not to do this and not to do that unless of course it's seriously going to harm them. Then I would step in

However, if they do do something seriously bad (and by that I mean criminal or really morally or socially damaging) then they won't just get a smack, I will beat the shit out of them. I don't want you to think I'm a violent person who hates kids, I'm not but I can't help but think that people like my father didn't really do much wrong in this respect and it's because they knew what would happen if they did.

However, if they do wished to do something like, say, smoking or taking my car for a spin when I'm out and practising their powerslides, then I would let them do it but under my personal and close supervision (providing they are old enough naturally). But I'd let them know that I wasn't happy but I'd rather they did it with me there than on their own where they could potentially come to more harm.

People should try anything once except incest and Morris dancing. So just let them do it!

On young kids though I do believe that a little light smack, just hard enough to make them know not to do it again and with a full and honest explanation by the parents (well done srebbe64 ) is the best deterrent there is. If children can't be controlled by their parent because the law won't allow it, this country will go to the wall.

The scum won't be satisfied until they control every aspect of people's lives. This is merely the latest lunacy, taking away the power of parents to discipline their children. And then they wonder why our streets are full of feral children running wild.

But that is not a government priority whereas persecuting the law abiding middle class is. I would not be at all surprised that, in the event such a law is introduced, many children will be taken into care on the grounds that their parents smack them.
