Can anyone help, I was just sitting in the lounge when there was a loud electrical sounding pop from the corner of the room (near a socket where the home cinema stuff is plugged in). There was no smoke or burning smell and everything seems to be working fine.

Any guesses?

Plug in a lamp.
Turn power off, lamp goes out
Check power off perhaps better to turn off everything.
Undo the 2 screws and pull forward the socket.
Look for charred cables, trapped wires, damp.
Clean and reconnect as required.
If not PVC cables call for help.
Reassemble and turn on again.
If you are unsure just dont do anything look in phone book under NICEIC electricians and ask.

I hate the smell of burnt fingers.

Probably just a capacitor going pop in a very expensive piece of hifi. You won't notice any difference now but one day in the not so distant future, the amp may just explode into a huge fireball, and burn the whole house down.

Just thought you might like to know

(or should that be )

Cheers guys, it did it again a few minutes ago so I have unplugged everything to see if that helps. In the morning assuming I've not been toasted overnight I'll have a shufty and see whats going on.

Really off topic, but do you happen to work at a Vauxhall dealer Mark?? (or did I imagine that?)

Serious mode: Are you sure its not coming from one of the speakers? Like a DC thump. It maybe one of the amp channels on its last legs.
