Making ours well over £2k a year and for that we get .....err?
Our rubbish collected every 2 weeks instead of every week.
Hang on a minute shirley that saves them money

The local council doesn't even maintain our road, we have to pay privately for that.

Damn roads around the county are full of pot holes too, I noted a series of terrible pot holes on my way to work each day which were there for almost 4 months and they were only filled in because I eventually complained about them.

In Reading they wanted more then 5%, but at least the spineless government has managed to cap it this time!

Of course the headline story based on this is that the planned expansion of the police (by 37 officers) won't happen

Somewhat ironic that Labour pretends to be the friend of the council tax payer and cap rises this year, when it is their own policies that have driven the dramatic rise in council tax since 1997.

Kentish your making the mistake of linking taxes with service provision. It's amazing that many people still do this. Quite a remarkable feat of mass brainwashing to persuade the tax paying population that most tax levied in order to provide a servce/funtion rather than being a 'social' wealth transfer from one soical group to another.

Of course you have to pay more money

you have to keep the local scraps in diamond white, and pieces of string for their dogs.

Otherwise they will start attacking people in the streets for cash.

Take a look at the average overmanned council office. They're paid quite well too. Or go to your local tip and see how many of the employees there are. All of them with expensive pensions. Someone has to pay for it all.

Yep, squeeze the payments made to councils (whom it could be said are in a better position to spend funds correctly than a centralised government), and make the government appear blameless 'but we're spending all this money on services, its the council's fault!'

is that all ? mine has gone up over 100% since 1997. I did read in our local rag that to keep the services that we have, with no investment or improvement, then a rise of at least 5% is needed just to stand still.
Most of the rises go towards bumping up the council workers pension funds.
How can each council justify these rises ? It wont be long before the average council tax monthly payment will be close to a mortgage payment

Pah who cares, surely as people pay more in taxes they in turn demand more pay or move to jobs that do pay more.

The government are shooting themselves in the foot ultimately because by capping the council taxes, and them having promised silly benefits, public spending by the councils will reduce yet further.

So services and quality of service will drop, taxes will go up moderately, and people will have less money to spend in the economy. Ultimately their wealth is being re-distributed to public service employee's who then blow it on fags and booze, again taxed to death...

Will this lead to anything at all except social economic breakdown?
