B'stards used a cloned card and my pin number for 4 transactions over a period of 4 days....

£1.00 Tesco's
£3.50 Shop in Canary Wharf
£26.00 Tesco's
£52.00 Tesco's

Now, If I were a thief and general low-life scum, I'd be "maxing it up" at cash points all over the place. I can under stand the "testers", but once they knew the card worked surely they would have gone to town? Wnakers that stole the g/f's card certainly did.

No idea. Can only assume they were watching whilst I was making a transaction.

When using a cash point always run your hand along the ridge above the keyboard for any 'hidden' cameras. Also if the slot for the card stands 'proud' of the fascia it sits on then try and move it - it might well be a card reader stuck on the front of the machine.

If anyone stands too close to you whilst using the machine, tell them to feck off!

yep, work colleague of mine had over £12k emptied from his account, whilst he was in Chile on holiday. they reckon it was a card-reader installed over a valid ATM.
they managed to take the cash out in 48 of £250 lumps, that's alot of machines...

a friend of mine and i had an encounter with one of these scum a couple of fridays ago - when i noticed the device stuck on the cash point just before i used it. We peeled the thing off and this chap was alongside us in seconds, agitated and demanded his device back. A few choice words (mainly from my sizeable chum!) and he scarpered, but at least we stopped a few peoples weekends being ruined. Plods duly informed but not much chance of catching him apparently. This was in the City, btw.

Scum. FYI the reason for small transactions is that anything below a certain level does not go online for authorisation so it is guaranteed to work. Or something.
Good luck- I hope you dont lose anything.

This is why chip and pin is a good thing - the bad guys can't clone the chips (encryption tech moved on a lot since magstripes invented)...

To be honest you got away lightly - last time I got done over it was for over 8k in 24 hours. Theiving scumbag even bought his wife flowers on my card!

Interesting - I had a Natwest card (that I hadn't requested) stolen from the post and the thieves went on a small spending spree in the Canary Wharf Tesco's after doing a small 'tester'.

Not sure, maybe it reads the magnetic strip on the card as it slides in.

Honestly, these are more common than you think. Working for Securicor, we get updates of what they look like all the time.

My card got cloned the other week, they atempted to get 4k overnight, I checke my account luckily the next day. I phoned to stop it and they said the fraud department had just picked it up, the money never actualy left my account, and all traces of it disapeared in 3 days. So there are people working on this issue, and obviously spotting some of the fraud.

just makes you wonder how often this is happening if you don't check your account everyday.

Which is why this seems so odd. Presumably they have managed to clone a chip and have the PIN, or else they're taking advantage of the grey area up until Feb 14th whereby you can still sign manually?

sounded like this was chip and pin, I also don't think it'll make any difference, it'll just change the type of crime if anything, like cars it'll make it more likely they "take" the card off you rather than have no contact what so ever with you.
