I have a bailliff coming to see me tonight to arrange payment of an outstanding council tax bill..

I have actually sent a check to cover the entire amount owed but the company will not have had a chance to bank it, an dthe guy wants to come round for a chat (presumablt so he can check my stuff out and bill me for the visit.

Now, I have no intention of letting him in, or letting him see in, and i plan on leaving my car down the road just incase he tries to place a lean or whatever they do on it..

I also plan on going out the back door and locking it behind me, and meeting him round the front of the house

Anyone have any experience of these guys, am i doing the right thing or should i just not bother answering the door, or am i just being silly abotu the whole thing?

I only have 1/2 hour before he gets here...

How do you know he is coming tonight? If you have his phone number I would call and tell him it has been paid in full. If he spends any time talking to you face to face, I would suspect he will bill you for it. And there is likely to be a couple of them, so I would be hesitant to open any doors, or let them know I was there. Once they have been let in once and touched your goods, they are allowed in to claim them as long as they leave the place secure.

Is'nt it unusual for a bailiff to give notice of a visit?

I always thought they just turned up to catch you unawares.

Good luck with it BTW.

I'd acho and add so some of the earlier advice.

If you've sent payment in full, tell him so and tell him to get knotted.

I would assume that this visit is something that they will try and charge you for....

I am in the same boat - fecking Brent Councils incompetency.
They haven't bothered to take any money from my account but sent the debt to a bailiff.
I've given up chasing them & emailed my ward Councillors and the heads of Revenue & Benefits.

As I understand you should not let the bailiff across the threshold - once you do they can come back at any time.
They are allowed to try doors and if open they may just walk in.
If there is a child under 12 in the house they are not allowed in even if an adult is present.

I'd advise you to lock the house and refuse to let him in.

I am not tto bothered about being charged for the visit TBH, I did pay late after all

I just don't want any 'shenanigans', now, or in the future.

the guy seems ok on the phone atleast...I calle dhis mobile when he left me a letter after his first visit, and i guess if you are prepared to meet up with them , they will happily make an appointment.

So, do i just pretend to not be here, or do i talk to them from an upstairs window?

And the going rate for bailiffs is something in the region of £150/hr. I would not be there when he arrives.

Good advice.

This seems quite relevant:
"Firstly, without an order of the Court they cannot do anything! Threats that “we will be sending one of our agents round to your house” should be treated with the contempt that it deserves. This is rule number one in the 'bully boys code of practice manual'. Whilst bona fide debt collection agencies do have a license to carry out site visits, the credit control department of a credit card company do not. Even so, if you were to receive a visit at your home address, these people do not have a right of entry and you can simply refuse to discuss the matter with them and tell them to go away. Contrary to popular belief, even County Court Bailiffs or Sheriff's Officers do not have a right to force entry and they can also be summarily despatched in the same way."

Bloody hell - a minigun in home / office surroundings (rather than display or promo). How does that work?
