Listen to that, but make sure you have headphones on. No point if its just speakers.

Play it all the way through, and tell me your spine doesn't tingle when the matches go below you

Ah, 'Dummy head' stereo, I believe the rowing sfx at the beginning of Floyd's 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' were recorded using that technique.

I recall a demo years ago on Tomorrow's World (another quality programe the BBC no longer produces, but hey, lets have some more celebrity garbage instead). The demo was of a technique called 3D Stereo, and it required nothing other than an ordinary stereo to work (similar to systems since such as Q-Sound). However the effect was astonishing.

They simulcast with BBC Radio, and started off with noraml stereo, then switched on the 3D effect and the sound changed incredibly to a much richer and wider effect - the sound came from beyond the speakers and filled the room around you. It used a processor to delay certain sounds by milliseconds and the tome they reached your ear drum to fool your brain into thinking that sounds were coming from all parts of three dimensional space.

Anyone else remember this?

Wow! My spine tingled every time the sound went behind me.

I just held my speakers up to my ears

Yep! I was in the car at the time and they broadcast it on the radio...was weird but very cool.

The BBC pioneered 'binaural stereo' in a couple of plays on Radio 4 many years ago. It was good but this is better I think.
