I was just about to point out that Churchills mother was American but the first link makes that clear. Not everyone here appreciates that. I've no doubt that he had a ticket booked just in case Hitler had made it........
Right man for the job at the time but I don't like his brand of politics.... His only interest was the welfare of the rich, as with all tories then and since.

Second that remark re our best statesman. Given that Winston was half yank then your best statesman too.
There is something irrationally emotionally attractive about that Spit flying over the ship. Even after 60 years it still evokes strong feelings. Dammit, the Spit is on par with Exalibur.

Its about time the second world war was forgotten about is stead of raking it up with Romanic views all the time.
people died now its time to forget and see that it don’t start aging this time with the USA war mongering all over the place and sticking there nose where it don’t belong trying to enforce there views and way of life on everyone else.

There are times when one issue matters so much more than any other or even all the rest combined. Does anyone give a tinker's dam what Churchill did outside of keeping England free from foreign domination? Everything else he did has long been repealed and any harm he did has long been undone.
No, he wasn't America's greatest statesman of the 20th Century. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was.

Which is why he, on his own orders, formed a state insuarance system during WW2 that would pay out in full to anyone suffering financial hardship as a reuslt of enemy bombs? The system paid out mostly to working class people who sufered from German bombing. He did this because he thought it was the right and moral thing to do. His idea, no one elses. Churchill had a social conscience - you only need to read his mmoirs to see that. He was of course totally focussed on winning the war and left a good degree of general governance to the coalition government of the time (which was formed from representatives of all parties).

I thinks it very important that WW1 and WW2 are remembered in every detail. War isn't nice, its not meant to be nice, but then life sometimes can be bad. Sealing ourselves off from the past is not the way forward.
People lost their lives to defend our society and way of life so the day we forget them surely is the day that we forget or start taking for granted our freedom. Its easy to lose these freedoms, but its a hard battle to get them back.
Interesting that America has a USS Churchill but we don't have an HMS Churchill...
Anyway, if this was the 1930's you'd all be saying what a war-mongering alarmist he was, for he was very unpopular in the myopic peacetime years. Luckily, he was right and luckily we won.
Put all the current Labour politcians one on top of the other next to Churchill and they wouldn't even reach his ankle.

Those who ignore the lessons of history often find themsleves reliving it. If GB and US had invaded Germany in 1935, WW2 would never have happened and tens of millions of lives would have been saved. But there you go.

Myopic view to say the least.
Many hundreds of thousands of souls gave their lives so that you might be free today to say that.
Go away, and learn to spell and use proper grammar child.

If only my dad found it so easy to forget the sights he saw when Belsen was liberated.

60 years, in the grand scheme of things, is very recent.
