I want to do something different before I go mad with boredom, but still need to cover the mortgage. Anyone know what ambulance staff earn?

Outrageous, when you consider that the pen-pushing civil servants who set ambulance service budgets, procure vehicles, administer premises etc. probably earn twice that

Yup... that sucks. They should be earning far more than bloody tube drivers...

My uncle spoke to an amubulance driver. The guy said that the job sucked now. All he did was rescue unconsciuous drunks, druggies and (victims!) of suicide attempts e.g, people the world would be better off if they weren't rescued Still, fun being able to drive as fast as you like!!

I gave up a decent career in the city as it was driving me mad. I'm still in the same field but working on a freelance basis now. At the mo the hours and money are great but I still fancy changing into something fresh. Trouble is it's not easy to move direction as everyone typecasts you into the same role. I feel like a damn tram on rails.

Give us some more info on which to base our answers;

how much do you need to cover your costs (ish) a month?

What would you like to do going forward?

What other impediments do you have? By that I mean - family or single? Aged parents that need looking after or not? Could you move around the country easily for example?

Would you be prepared to re-train (and all that entails)?

If I understand recent threads correctly, don't you also get to wear a vest, carry a 3 ft sword and lift weights?

I think I ideally need about £30K, but I could probably just manage on 20 ish.

Future plans? If I was on 20K I'd certainly hope for some chance of advancement, if on 30 or so I could take it or leave it.

I'm single, no committments other than the mortgage, one aged parent who is healthy enough at the moment.

Relocating could be complicated.

Don't mind retraining, I'd actually quite like it.

The other issue is, I'm 44. Something else I've considered is accountancy. Anyone know if there is much demand for newly qualified middle aged accountants with no accounts experience but years of IT experience?
There must be a few accountants on here, though they might be looking to do something else.

Police force recruit over 40's and if you have good life experience they will fast track you (depending on what is in your CV).

You must be physically fit of course and able to pass the fitness test which is fairly easy.

Starting salary is approx £23k or more if you are in the London Met Pol

You're going to be a long time before you're worth £30K, certianly up here in Yorkshire anyway, couldn't comment on London etc,

I think you'd find it hard to get in somewhere with absolultely no experience, and if they did you'd be looking at 12/15K ish.

If you studied and qualified you could be on £30K ish in say 5/6 years, if you were any good!

OI thats a bit harsh on us lorry drivers, I used to drive chemical tankers long distance (10Years). Its a good job if you dont mind being away from home all week. left that job to work for a company delivering paint, there's nothing like trying to deliver around city centre London with a 62' waggon and drag,
Now I drive a fuel tanker delivering heating oil.Meet loads of interesting people, out in the countryside in Suffolk all day,
Only thing is I now earn about 25K which is what I was earning 10 years ago

If you bought it a truck brought it!!!
