Got called out to an RAF base (no, really, bear with me
).
When I got there I had to park in a designated bay and walk to the guardroom to sign in, get a pass, dance the fandango etc., usual drill for civvies on a military base.
Parked in a bigger bay was a tanker. The driver had got out and was ambling s-l-o-w-l-y towards the guardroom. Walking at a moderate pace I caught him up and passed him (didn't indicate or use a lifesaver, mind you
).
A few feet further and I heard him say something, just as a woman came out of the g/r. I wasn't sure whether he was talking to her or had got a mobile phone; either way I didn't think he had anything to say to me so I ignored him.
As I reached the g/r door, he said (louder) "F***ing deaf as well as blind then".
I turned and said "What?"
Him: You heard what I said.
Me: No, I didn't. If I'd heard what you said I wouldn't be asking.
Him: I said, what's the rush, running to the gate.
By now I had the door open and he barged through it.
Me: What's your problem?
So he squares up to me.
I squared him back.
Him: I got here first, you were pushing in.
Me: You were taking your time, some of us are in a hurry. Look, you go first if it means that much to you.
By this time the assorted squaddies were giving us their full attention
So knobstick (who was a couple of inches shorter than me, and I'm a shortar53) approaches the desk and mumbles 'fuel delivery'.
They fiddle with his passes and he turns to head out. I just KNEW he was going to barge me so I took a neat sidestep and he missed, tripped up and caused a sniggering in the ranks
He goes out, I say to the guy on the desk "F*** knows what his problem was".
Some pleasantries are exchanged about the antics of people coming onto the base, I get my passes and head back to the van.
Amazingly, Volvo-boy is not even halfway to his truck, STILL ambling along.
I got in the van, approached the sentry point and said to the (armed) guys "I'd give this 2@ in the tanker a good going-over if I were you, after what he was calling squaddies in there"
For the life of me I couldn't get to grips with his problem. I could have understood if I barged him out of the way, carved up his tanker or whatever, but I merely walked faster than he did.
Strange people they let loose with wagons, eh.

the sceptic in me says he squared up to this one squaddie then the whole of his platoon barrels in and gives him a kicking - but I do hope this wasnt the case...
Nope, he wasn't a squaddie. Some incoherent lowlife from the Leeds/Bradford/Sheffield/Rotherham area, judging by his accent.
Someone who is anti-social by nature chooses a job where they get to spend long hours on their own.
After a long time spending most of the day on their by themself, they start to withdraw into their own little fantasy world, a world where they make all the rules.
Next thing is, you've inadvertently broken one of their own personal little made-up rules and their calling you names and trying to shoulder-barge you on the way out of the guard room.
Or alternatively they're side-swiping you on the motorway with their 40 tons of articulated truck...

Might I interject on behalf of the reasonable side of town, we are not all like that.
FFS he's a wagon driver ...... what did you expect? He'll have been rudely awakened from his slumbers on the motorway, grabbed three big breakfasts, twenty four pints of sugary tea, watched his DVD porn collection and had a wank in his sock, all before 8am.

Not if you're still in Norfolk... this was Leeming.
I was at Marham week before last, closer to home? It was first day on the job for the guardroom guy, I was absolutely busting for a dump and he took all bloody day to sign in the guys in front of me...
