I've done a bit of a search and found a topic on the benefit of repaying early, but little was mentioned about how they catch up with you.

I left uni in 2001 and haven't paid it back and they've not been taking any directly from pay even though i've always been above the £15k boundary. They sent to odd statement to my parents house but since last year when they rang up and were told (by my dad) that i didn't live there anymore, nothing.

Anyone know when and how they catch up with you? Maybe when you apply for a mortgage or register for council tax?

Thanks

Wouldnt suprise me if the students loan company were a 'partner' of the IR and they got you via NI number.

I seem to remember something in the small print that if they have to find you, they will, and you'll pay the costs incurred

Your credit rating will slowly go down the tube which will make it very difficult for you get any type of loan in the future, including a morgtage.

You drive a Griffith 500. Surely you can afford to pay back £50 a month?

Give them a bell, tell them you haven't heard from them despite writing to them about your new address (white lie) and set everything up and start paying. You'll be gutted when you want a mortgage if paying (or not ) your student loans has shagged your chances.

I'm sure they'll catch up with you somewhere down the line....unless of course you live outside the UK.

This happened to me when I first started working. For over a year I wasn't paying anything and kept querying with them and my employer as to why. Turns out the local tax office had lost my records and hence the student loan people didn't know I was working! Now all sorted and it's taken straight off my salary. They didn't fine me or request I pay back what was owned over that time, although it has cost me in the interest it built up over that time

I'd check with your current employer as to why you're not paying it back as you should be!!

Do the honest people who do pay up on time have to pay interest on these loans?

But as it's taken straight off your salary (assuming PAYE), you need to talk to your employer as they're the ones who file your tax returns etc.

Last time I looked I was paying £15 a month in interest on an £8k loan.

The loan did go on a car and I can afford to pay it off, but don't want to and who would given the chance to run away. Just thinking that if they are a company and not a government body linked to the IR, if they've no address for me, and haven't made diductions from my income, when do they catch up?

They have your NI, so should just start taking it back. Be careful that they don't catch up with you then ask for a back payment for the time you've been earning over the limit.

Student loan won't effect your chance of a mortgage, they're not allowed to hold that against you, to my knowledge it won't show up on your credit rating at all.
