Round the corner from where I live is a "meeting house" and each sunday (and other days) a whole bunch of people meet there. The biggest obvious thing is that the women all wear skirts and one of those funny scarf things on their long hair.

Silly and very odd question - what branch of religion are they?

I have walked past the "meeting house" and done a google search but nothing - maybe they dont want to be recognised, but just interested to know thats all...

Any ideas?

Sound more like Plymouth Brethren to me.

Lady Quakers don't normally feel the need to wear headscarves.

If they arrive in big Volvos or MPVs, and they wear blue headscarves, then it sounds like they are Plymouth Brethren. I used to work with one. She claimed that a windowless building near our office was a PB meeting house. But one day when I was walking past it I had a look and saw that it was in reality an electricity sub-station.

Mormons did, once, but not for the last 100 years plus. However, there is a rebel extreme sect (now doesn't that sound familiar) of Mormons who still practice bigamy but it is technically illegal, even in Utah.

Woow, thats spooky - I didnt mention the MPV thing but its soooo true. They all have Voyagers, Galaxies or Tourans with blacked out windows (so cant tell if they are full or not). Didnt want to stereotype too much as just thought that they were obviously families who fall for the modern trend....

Any ideas why they all have MPV's?

Brethren. I've got loads of them around my way.

I don't think they're too dangerous.

If the husbands (and sons) look miserable as sin, and all wear identical drab garb....then, yes, they're PB's....

Used to have a bunch living behind me in a very big house house. They get together and sing a lot. God...do they sing a lot! And they all drive people carriers.

Also used to buy stuff from one of their trade outlets. Family run, and all the paperwork done by hand...they believe all electronic stuff is a conduit for the devil to get inside their heads...no computers, no mobile phones, no TV.....

In fact, on the wall behind the counter was a big sign that read....

Swearing

Blasphemy

Smoking

And the use of radio telephones

Are forbidden on these premises......

One wag was seen to read the notice, then pull out his mobile, dial a number and mutter.....

Jesus Christ, you dozy ttt, get off yer feckin arse in that van and bring me some fags.....

I remember when I was young a female PB used to come around to my mates house all the time and talk to his mum at the doorstep for ages. I eventualy asked his mum why she doesnt she just come in instead of standing there. apparently it was an unclean house and therefore a place where the devil would dwell. F ing nutters all of em
