I used to have a Yamada 6100 DVD player that also played most of my DivX and XviD files. However, it died over Christmas and despite my attempts to revive it (jabbing it with a screwdriver) I had to concede it was dead.

Anyhoo - it's now payday and it's time to buy a new one. Has anyone got any recommendations? I'm currently looking at the Yamada/Umax 6700, but wondered if anyone had any undiscovered gems.

I bought a panasonic one from Richer Sounds (£119) and so far I cannot fault it. Saying that the only non DVD format stuff I have tried is DIVX copies of Lost season 2...

Errr... could I ask what the hell are all the versions you listed. I can guess mp4 is music related and dvd is normal, but what are the others?

mp4/DivX/XviD are all video formats, normally used on a computer.

Standard DVDs are encoded to MPEG2 format. MP3 is an audio encoding format. MP4 is a video encoding format that allows a standard DVD to be encoded to a much smaller files size, without loss of quality. DivX and XviD are both types of MP4 encoding!

Most DVD players will only play MPEG2 encoded discs, which include DVDs, some VCDs and SVCDs. However, alot of video that is downloadable via the Net, from iTunes for example, are in MP4 format.

Hope that helps!
