I learnt a lot on the exercise and dieting thread, so thought I'd see if I could tap that knowledge and see if anyone could advise me on something that's been nagging at me...

I'm allergic to fresh fruit and nuts. If I eat fruit or nuts then my mouth, lips and throat itch, sting and swell. I've seen an allergist, and the best that the allergist could come up with was to cook fruit before I eat it. I used to eat loads of fruit, but now obviously I eat none...

Could anyone tell me what nutrients I'm missing out on by not eating fresh fruit and how I could replenish those? Also, I've no idea how to cook fruit, other than boiling apples - so any hints on how to cook fruit would be appreciated!

thanks

Cooking removes lots of the good stuff so I wouldn't bother.

Depending on what fruit your eating your missing out on various vitamins and antioxidants. Things like green tea and vegetables can help with the antioxidants and vitamin tablets with vitamins, or look up alternative foods that contain those vitamins your missing out on.

Is it definetly the fruit that you're allergic to and not the chemicals/preservatives that the fruit is coated in?? It sounds odd being allergic to all fruit as the make up of all of them is so diverse.

Cooking can make a difference to an ability to tolerate food. Assuming you don't go into anaphlactic shock try experimenting with smoothies - perhaps breaking down the structures of the food would help? What about clear juice that has no fibres in it.

Good luck!

No ana-thingy shock, so I'm free to experiment, but the reaction is jolly unpleasant!

Fruit juice is usually fine (though some really freshly squeezed stuff will get me) - and I drink plenty of Tropicana apple and orange juice to no ill effects.

I don't think that it's man-made chemicals, as I get the reaction if I try and eat pears or apples from our garden - which don't have anything sprayed on them at all. Some salads do it too. I've just eaten a tuna and cucumber wrap from some meeting leftovers and my lips are burning now.

The allergist took samples from various fruits and put them on pin pricks on my arm. The things that I was allergic to came up in big lumpsI didn't get much out of my visit to him though, as he just confirmed what I already knew, and didn't offer any advice!

Get yourself some Innocent smoothies, expensive, but, bloody lovely and all that's in it is 100% fruit so you should be okay - no preservatives and stuff. Try the strawberry and banana one...

Cheers,
Rob.

I have this exact allergy too.

I eat tinned mixed fruit from delmonte, and drink Five Alive tropical by the pint, all vegetables have to be cooked, as do all fruit (like apple pies etc). The idea of drinking a smoothie terrifies me.

I tried 'organic' raw fruit and veg, and the same things happened- so I'm not entirely sure what is actually the trigger. I was never allergic to nuts until about 5-6 years ago- at the mo, peanuts are ok, so life is still worth living, but hazelnuts (my fave) are one of the worst things for me.

Interesting. I was the same. I used to eat all sorts of fruit and nuts all the time until about 5 or 6 years ago, when suddenly I started getting severe reactions. Apples have always done it, since I was a kid. The allergist didn't mention it, but surely there must have been something that triggered it for us both?

I think you can grow to be allergic to stuff.
Over the past year or so I have been getting allergic reactions to garlic.

Shame as I love proper garlic bread ie whole clove of garlic roasted in the oven with a bit of honey and then spread on ciabatta.

I get the whole lips/gums/mouth swelling plus a rash up both my arms.

If you can eat vegetables, you are not really missing out on much. Vegetables are generally even better for you than fruit.

Do you think there's any chance that people become allergic to things due to over-exposure? I used to eat three bananas a day and now I can't go near them...

I hope I don't become allergic to Pistonheads!

Thats my reasoning.

I am laying off the garlic for a few months and then will try a little bit, say in a pasta dish and see what happens.

My Crohns doesnt help matters much in the eating department anyway so I am doubley careful when I start getting reactions to food.

You wouldn't save yourself a "fortune", look at the fruit content then price up a punnet of strawberrys, some bananas and some apples. Sure, it might be a quid cheaper (if that), but the savings arn't going to make you a rich man. Plus there's the issue of your own time, and that if it's a hassle you very well might not do it!

Cheers,
Rob.

Could anyone possibly be allergic to Vitamin C? If so, there must be a 'safe' way to take it as it's essential.

Odd.

The sugars in the fruit would be dilute? If so, they'd come through in orange juice, and I'm fine with orange juice. I don't know what it is in fruit that I am actually allergic to... the symptoms are the same with nuts - except with almonds, where the taste or smell just makes me want to vomit straight away!

Odd.

I don't think there is such an allergy, Vitamin C is an essential vitamin.

You must shop somewhere pricey!!! I make really cheap smoothies (try using frozen fruit this time of year) for nowhere near the price of a small bottle of innocent or similar. I'm not knocking innocent etc. I like them and if you're out and about they are great. It's by far cheaper and much more satisfying to make your own though - plus for me, as I don't drink cows milk I can also make them with soya milk as well which makes a change.

Time wise it's a bit like the myth about ready meals being quicker to cook that real food - open freezer, tip frozen fruit into beaker, chop up banana, add apple juice - take hand blender, stick in beaker and blitz it - 30 seconds max I'd have thought? The beauty of a hand blender is that you just run the choppy thing under the tap and it's clean! Plus you can make then in vast quantities and drink them until your tummy aches!
