AAARRGH!

I just had to call my bank .

First off i go through the automated bit...

"please key in your sort code for security purposes"

Done

"Please key in your account number for security purposes"

Done.

*RING, RING, Ring*

"Hi there, for security purposes can i ask your name?"

Sure its .....

And your Date of Birth?

"Can i ask you where you branch is?"

yes, it's....

"OK, how can i help?"

I need to know if you can....

"Aah, before i can discuss your account i need to ask you a security question!"

OK, go on then..

"What is the issue number and amount of the last check that went through your account?"

I don't know, the statements you send me are not that current, I can tell you who banked any cheques last month and what the numbers were if you like.

Sorry, But we can not help you if you do not have this information!!!!

What the hell is that all about??

They have no alternative questions! How many people would know the date the last cheque was banked from their account, what the number was etc without looking at their statement?
And that info would not even be on your latest statement probably!!

AAARGHHH!!!!

They really should have offered you another question to validate your identity.

I note BT have got wise to you asking them to confirm who they are. They offer to give you any information you want...

I've had the "last transaction" question before with HSBC when I've rung them, which I didn't know the answer to so they did ask me an alternative.

What I do hate even more is when HSBC (my bank) phone me up and say "to confirm who you are please can you tell us XYZ".. Urmmm, no, you rang me up, I'm not telling you that!!! Like Plotty says about BT above, I hope they change that soon!

scared but happy

I was asked the last payment made recently for security, didn't have a clue. I just started making stuff up, said there should have been £850,000 for my new bugatti, but they didn't accept that. I phoned back, and the next person didn't ask the extra security, go figure?

I always fail the security questions. Lloyds' favourite is to ask the amount of overdraft limit - I never know, I have a couple of accounts and don't remember that detail. The other favourite is the value of the debit card transaction in say Tesco three days ago - I never know this either but they always were quite good at accepting "ohh I don't know - somewhere around a tenner"!!

I now have a new approach - I've got a personal account manager and I phone the call centre and ask to be put through to X in X branch. I then repeat this five or six times and FINALLY they put me through!!

Yup, they are my bank.... I asked him for an alternative question and hung up as he was telling me that was the only question..I phoned back and got the same routine from someone else so hung up again.

is it barclays per chance? my card stopped working, called them up

enter card number
enter sort code
what is your name
mother maiden name
date of birth
sum of last transaction made - not the foggiest
ok then sir can you tell me the details of any transactions in the last 3 months - no i cant now why wont my damn card work
sorry sir we cant help you - why not what personal information are you going to tell me all i want to know is why my card wont work
can you name me any transactions you have made recently sir - no, fine, goodbye

THEN i tried to transfer to HSBC but they wouldnt even let me do that. hsbc wanted 3 months of statements to validate the transfer, and due to barclays screwing up my billing address they had been sending them somewhere else and i only had 1 month of statements. so, after paying £5 a pop, after 3 times they still hadnt sent me the proper statement, but rather a printout of an excel spreadsheet which was of no use to me, and more importantly of no use to HSBC. I am still stuck with Barclays, for now
