First off, I am an industrial plumber, specialising in dry cleaning installations, so not that clued up on domestic (that's my excuse anyway)

A friend of mine rang me with the following problem: His heating comes on in the morning and works fine to start with. The rads get nice and hot and so does the water. Come about midday the pump switches off and the rads upstairs start to get cold, although the boiler is running and the timer is still calling for heat. The next day and it does the same thing, works ok in the morning.
He has set the room and boiler stat to max, still does the same thing.

If the pump is knackered then surely it would just pack up for good?

Any ideas? Ferg...Simpo

If it has motor valves, each time the system starts and stops, the valves move from end to end. The mechanisim is quite cheap, and the bearings (such as they are) wear out in the end. This happened to mine. The spring inside the valve is quite strong, and when the wear takes over the motors get into a "mechanical lock" that they're not supposed to.

If the valve can't move then the heating can't change on/off state.

Maybe, that's it?

When the pump stops trace the live feed. If it's live at the pump = Pump. If it's not then look at the microswitch in the motorised valve. If it's a mid-position (3-port) valve then the cylinder stat and 'Hot Water Off' circuit in the programmer could also be causing it.

I'm having the same problem.

Had a poke around the boiler and found a fuse holder that twists into the control panel on its lower edge. Glass fuse had blown. Replaced it, and all was well....but not for long.

What's that all about, then....?

Aaah. That's the pump taking too much current.
