My "new" toy came with a NI plate on it (ie apparently ageless). Been thinking about seeing whether it is worth selling, because I'm not fussed whether folks know my car is an '81 or not (ie old 'X'). Tried a plate-dealer for valuation, and they are suggesting it is worth £850!

Anyone know whether this is bullst value (inflated so they can get my business) or a realistic proposition?

The plate does end in "328", so maybe some BMW owners might be interested!

Also, how much hassle is it to sell and replace with an age plate? I already know my insurer will charge about a tenner for a new certificate, but what about tax?

Thanks in advance,

Sheepy

May also be worth something to a Ferrari 328 owner.

They tell you what they will return to you, provided they sell the plate, so they add their margin to that figure and then advertise it.

If you are very lucky, it could sell quickly but you'd probably need to put the plate on retention first, which is about £100'ish from memory and they might still not get a buyer.

Dead easy to arrange this, but depending on how you do it you may have to spend a few quid initially as there's a charge for putting the plate onto a retention certificate.

There's nothing to worry about regarding the tax, gone are the days when you had to send the disc in, they now send you a new disc first.

You do need to send the V5 and the MOT for the vehicle together with the application form and the relevant fee to the VRO though.

There's an application pack available through the DVLA website that explains everything fully.

I had a private plate and advertised it on PH Classifieds. Much to my surprise, it sold!

However I wouldn't go there again - far too much hassle and expense, ep if you change cars a lot.

That's what I'm trying to find out: How much (and what) hassle and expense did you have? The commercial plate sellers seem to make it sound so easy:

My car is taxed and mot'd, and then just fill in a few forms.

No hassle!

Fill out a couple of forms

Costs £105

You get a new reg no, reg document arrives in the post, you get a replacement tax disk

job done.

edited to add - If you have a local dvla office you can pretty much do all of it over the counter with them.
The only hassle is if they (at random - its never happened to me, and I've chopped and changed around a few plates)request to inspect the vehicle

I think they have changed it now so that they won't do it over the counter. You can drop the forms off, but they send the stuff out to you in the post anyway so theres not much point.

Putting it on retention costs £85 AFAIK, my insurers didn't charge me for getting a new insurance certificate, and you just need to send off the forms and your V5 - the request the tax disk once you get your new one.

You could always advertise it in the PH classifieds/on ebay...or I'll give you £5 for it

Trust me its £105 - £80 CT Fee (includes assignment to another vehicle) and £25 retention Fee - done one a few of weeks ago and the receipt is sitting on my desk
Yep they post the retention certificate out to you - also the new tax disk and log book - By doing it over the counter you get a faster turnaround, all paperwork is checked and sorted, you pays your money and it gets dealt with within a few days.
My last one took 3 days max to get the new tax disc and confirmation of new reg plate through, got new plates made up and PXed the vehicle, log book took a couple of weeks, retention certificate arrived quite quick too.

We got ours through Elite Registrations, and they sell for private individuals. They did all the paperwork for us, not sure about the selling end though.

Some of the number plate sites have a box where you can type the plate number in and they will let you know if they have anyone that may be interested in it, and how much you may get for it.

But no the DVLA won't do them over the counter anymore, we had to go in and get the MOT cert changed because it was on the old Reg no and they had notices up saying its a drop off service only now for changing plates. We got the V5 back though within a week.
