If you've got a suitable vehicle you can take it away with you no problems. I've done it with washers, driers and a fridge or 2.

I once returned a 1 week old Tumble Dryer to Currys after it expired. The manager was a bit perplexed when i wheeled it in and demanded a refund

They will let you take it away.

However, what happens if you get it home unpack it and discover it's damaged.

"You must have damaged it in transit sir"

" We can't be held liable as we didn't deliver it"

Better still order it off the interweb. Get it cheaper and get it delivered.

Bit wary of buying 'big' things of the web.. in case need to return it. Pal bought a massive telly from a certain e shop & had a problem with it 1st week. Was a nightmare I recall....

Not IME.

Went to buy a TV a few weeks back, now when I'm spending a fair few £££ I like to do my research and get the best product my money can buy. So when I decide on what i want and where i want to buy it from i want it there and then. Oh no I had to wait a week and a half for it to finally be delivered.

Out of 30odd different Plasma/LCD TV's they had there were only 3 I could have taken home that day, unless I wanted the ex-display one...

I guess it might be different with washing machines, etc but doubt it.

Next time I think I’ll just stick to the net…

From my experience your choices are very limited if you want to take away imemdiately. I went down to my local Comet a few years ago and told them I wanted a tumble drier to take away there and then (ours had just expired and we were going on holiday the day after and had just-washed clothes we wanted to take with us. Yes, yes, could have gone to a launderette but whatever). Although they had stacks on show, the actual stock they had was woeful and I had to take an ex-demo (at a small discount) in the end.

Worth noting that if you have a Costco close to you then they keep good stock levels of a limited range of white goods at ok prices. If I had known that then I would have gone straight there.

Reminds me of when I went to buy a new bed. I'd walked into town ordered it and paid cash, they said they would deliever it later that day. So off I went home about 20 min walk. The driver was waiting for me when I got home, he could have given me a lift!!

<back on topic>

We've taken a TV/DVD package and a Tumble Dryer away from Comet. Stock was a problem on the dryer, so that gave us one that was marked as reserved because we paid cash there and then. (work that one out!)

Chose a new washbasin from Wickes. £90 + £15 delivery. 'That's OK' I said, 'I'll collect it'. 'No, it's the charge to get it here, it's not a stock item'. 'Bollox to that then'.

Went back a few days later, spoke to a different person and got it for £90, no fuss... and delivered free...

I recently read an article in "Retail Week" - (no jokes about being boring please!) - that Dixons were trialing 2/3 new concept stores in the Birmingham area.

They were based on the Ikea concept, in that they were simply warehouses for the stock. No sales help, no frills, no advertising, just a collection point. All self service.

They also claimed that the prices were the same as the internet as they had no overheads. The example in the article was a george foreman grill which is 34.99 in Currys but £14.99 in their new warehouse.

Done both, takeaway and delivered.

Comments re casing damage if takeaway worth noting.

End of last year we were up at the outlaws and the tumble dryer had expired. Unfortunately we were in Mrs FiF's car so no possibility of takeaway.

For £12 they had an independant delivery driver who later that very day, a Sunday no less, collected it from store, delivered the dryer to m-i-l, unpacked it, took away the old one. Needless to say he got a good drink out of that on top of the £12.
