A little harsh, but its the fault of parents who cannot raise children, a lack of respect and responsibility to themsleves and others.

Sounds like they weren't fit to be parents. There really should be some form of test, the most important job in the world and any er is allowed to do it.

Unfortunately a tragic conclusion to behaviour which, I reckon, occurrs on a daily basis in homes around the country. It's so easy to have kids yet constant work to raise them properly.

Despite the sad imperfections the current system is the best. Who wants a government busybody deciding who can or cannot have children? At least the smoke detector was working which isn't always the case.
As for junior playing with matches, neither of my two had ever used a match or lighter before they had to light bunsens at school - until then they didn't have any use for them. Suppose I must be a bad parent.

Well me for one. You need a driving licence to operate a car, licence to practice as a Doctor, Dentist, Solicitor yet you can become a parent with no qualifications whatsoever. All these jobs have responsibilities but I think most people would agree that being a parent entails far more personal responsibility than the jobs listed above. Unless people can prove they are able and willing to undertake such a responsibility they should not be allowed to have children because if they do they are increasing the burden on the rest of society.

I agree. Also how do you break the cycle of bad parents producing bad children that become bad parents.

The danger is of course that who decides who is a good parent?

There is always an attraction to matches and things.

If the parents can't either discipline them for messing about with them, or fulfill their interest wholly by letting them play with them outside supervised to "get it out of their systems" then your asking for trouble locking them in a room with matches

Poor kids

Its tragic Prison wouldnt make them any more careful, they have paid the ultimate price already. Its not the "locked in" that bothers me, thousands of kids have their doors locked, including one of my mates when he was a kid - and we were both pyros.

Its the fact that the parents ignored the screams, which must have been quite frenzied, which bothers me, regardless of the 'supposed cause' of the screaming.

Yes. My little girl's only 13 weeks old but we can already distinguish her bored/don't want to go to sleep cries from her in pain with wind cries.

Thats two little people removed from the gene pool.

Just think how the parents will now miss out on seeing them get their first ASBO, going jail for joy riding and scoring Herion for the 1st time.

Yes Darwin is spot on.

I was thinking that,i feel the main issues of this country lies within how it supports its social services dept, when i was a little toerag it was going through a transition period from ultra strict, which was open to abuse ....to the softer approach which cost £££££'s,then it collapsed or seemed to.
Anyone out there aware of how our Social Services Dept is doing these days?

There seems to be a few out there that harbour view an "us and them" view, and this is why some of you cant understand why you get burgled or beaten up.

Kids that become parents,

Emotionally abused kids
Sexually abused kids
Verbally abused kids
Physically abused kids
Divorced parents kids
Adopted kids
Junkies kids
Drunks kids
Uneducated kids
Kids that were doing well then something tragic happened kids
Abandoned kids
Backward kids
Mental problem kids
Misguided kids
Homeless kids
etc
etc
etc
Different Ethnic background kids.
Cant speak english kids
Bullied kids
Bad role model kids
etc
etc
etc

Where is our social services?
