Sorry to bring another 'global warming' issue up but...

We are getting told that the sea level is and will rise as the ice melts.

Surely, if the ice is there, already in the water, it will not make the sea level rise when it melts as its only transferred from solid to liquid but still weighs the same.

I.E - Think of the bath theory, if you put a big block of ice in the bath, the level of water naturally rises. When the ice eventually melts, the water level will remain the same as when the ice was in there. Its still there but just in a different format.

So - surely this rise in sea level can't be correct, can it?

The Antarctic is a continent covered with ice, as opposed to the arctic which is a frozen sea. If the Antarctic ice melted then the water would flow into the sea and the levels would rise (supposedly.)

Greenland ice rests on land, as does quite a lot of antarctic ice, if that melts it adds water to the oceans, plus if sea temperatures rise the water expands, and sea levels will rise.

I thought the above was probably the reason but was unsure.
