It's new phone time again and have been tempted by an O2 XDAs; either the exec or mini. Any one got any comments on them?

The exec is a bit bulky but looks the danglies functionality wise and has 3G. The mini is smaller but no 3G.

Opinions?

Cheers.

Work have given us O2 XDAs with embedded WindowsXP.

They are UTTERLY SHITE BEYOND ALL COMPREHENSION.

Random crashing, non-responsive keys, completely counter-intuitive displays, difficult to navigate menus. Absolutely utterly wank phones that noone of us want. I mean you can't even set the call history to show you a list of callers with the time they called.

They're so irredeemably abysmal I have to say this again:

They are UTTERLY SHITE BEYOND ALL COMPREHENSION. If there is a hell it'll be being forced to use these for all eternity.

I have the Orange SVP M500 which I believe is the xda-mini in another form.

Frankly it's fantastic! Top marks...

Mine only becomes non-responsive and crashes when the memory is full. This is Windows, so remember to close down programs you aren't using! It's very intuitive to navigate, it's well, like windows

Mine has an excellent call history system.

I also have a SE P910 for work - and that I do hate (and I'm a techie)

If you can get hold of one, the XDA2 is much much more realiable than the XDA2i or XDA2s.

We've not used the mini or exec here so I can't comment on those.

I detest everythinhg about mine from the fact that if you are using the keys quickly you outpace the system to the stupid mickey mouse windows experience shiny Windows for Retards display. I hate it so much I have paid my own money to change the handset to an Ericson K750 (used to have one at my old place) that actually does what it says on the tin. I hardly use my XDa so it can't be running out of resources surely?

I've got an XDA exec and its a great piece of kit if you set it up right. O2 include lots of crap that really slows it down. Get rid of that by loading the business ROM profile and it flies. I use it as a phone, camera, word editor, power point viewer, diary, address book, emailer, web surfer, MP3 player, movie viewer etc etc etc. Never had a problem with it. I'd advise getting the XDA exec rater than the XDAii as its a lot higher spec.

The problem is that it doesn't close the applications when you hit the 'x' in the top right corner, just minimises them.

Go to Start/settings/system/memory/running programs.

This is the only real short-coming I've come across - and I agree it's a pretty stupid one

I guess my problem is that working with Microsoft products you realise how truly shite they are.

Hmm sounds promising. I had an IPAQ so am used to clearing up programs etc.

What is it like for making calls; is it a bit of a brick or do you use a headset?

Cheers.

The problem with the XDA2s is, oddly enough, not the Microshaft OS, but the O2 software.
Delete it immediately, for it is both evil and inept.
We had no end of problems with ours untill we removed every last vestige of it, at which they became dream bits of kit. Highly recommended.

I had an XDA2 untill i buggered up the screen after about 18months of neglecting it buy dropping on garage floors etc etc, I'll be replacing it with an XDA Exec when I get a bit of spare cash.

Yes they have niggly problems but their ability far exceeds these...oh and load it with the corporate ROM that doesnt have the O2 Active crap, I think thats been mentioned.

Iain

It's small enough to be used as a phone

Can someone explain what we need to do to sort these phones out? How do I change the ROM program on it?

I've got an XDA2s - folowing an XDA2 which packed up after 2 years. I'm intrested in this bit about deleting the O2 software. I've no real problems or issues with it (the unit that is) but how do you do this and what difference does it make.

I have the XDAIIi and had the two XDA II before that. My only reason for upgrade is the WI-FI connection.
They (IIs) are good phones but I heard that they can have keyboard problems (ie catch going sloppy). But saying that I will no doubt upgrade to one in the future.
I have not found them slow I find Nokia to have the slowest software on earth - But I am tempted by the 'N'? series
They can be bulky I find for making calls but as they are good for Tomtom, mine sits in the car with bluetooth headset.

I have the XDA Exec. I hard reset it and put the corporate build on it (which uses the most basic settings) then put the GPRS and MMS settings in manually.

Fantastic bit of kit - I am a IT solutions and technical support provider and I must say its a totally impressive piece of kit - I cannot understand why Yugguy is having so many problems. Are you sure you didnt get a faulty one :S

Been using it all day out in the field, sending and recieving emails, using Messenger, organising appointments and web-configuring routers - no problems at all

Just my 2p - pm me if you want the corp install instructions

I've recently got an I-Mate KJam, which is basically the same thing as the Mini I believe.. its a top bit of kit, but you do need to know a few things about it to get it to run properly. For the first week or so it kept crashed, or resetting itself. It turns out it was Skype which doesnt like running on WM5, and the Anitvirus software, which were at fault. Unistalled them both, then removed all signs of them from the registry, did a hard reset and bobs your etc etc. Now it works perfectly and I'm really happy with it. The WiFi function is superb.. hope that helps, S

It's cos mine's an XDA SP and you can't really do any config on it at all.
