Anyone want to explain this? I mean, why the big hoohaa that Iran is developing nuclear weapons and the supposed threat that this might cause when we've had the same technology for a while now. Aren't they entitled to an invasion deterrent as well?

Anyone?

Yes but then we wouldn't be able to bully them into submission.

We're bigger, we have more bombs.

It's not moral....it's just life.

We don't have a history of proclaiming that a neighbouring nation should be wiped off the face of the earth.

what if they didn't use it as a bargaining chip? what if they used the weapons to make demands? what if they threw a weapon at israel in some misguided thought that with retaliation (if it comes) they will all be heaven with virgins? there are too many whatifs.

and quite simlpy - do we want yet another nation on this planet armed to the teeth with nukes?

We haven't used them in over 60 years because there's been too much to lose. The nutters in Iran and such like places have no fear of the consequences and would like to use them at the drop of a hat.

No fear of the consequences? I very much doubt that the inhabitants of Iran would be too keen on large areas of their country being turned into glass tablemats. Nuking anyone would be suicidal, and I'm damn sure that the self serving scum that rises to the top in Iran is pretty wedded to their own health and wealth, much like our own self serving scum.

And the likelihood is that the Iranian state will not be all that careful about keeping track of all the nuclear material they make.

Only small amounts are needed to do terrible things.

Did you know that plutonium - as well as being the material used in the creation of fusion bombs - is also highly toxic? You could poison an entire city's water supply in a just a few minutes with some convential explosive and some dirty nuclear material.

Bad stuff to let anyone make without keeping the tightest track of it...we may be laughably bad at that. But anyone else?

Agreed. Thankfully we have a history of secular government.

But the upshot is - no nutjobs (of any persuasion) should really have access to fissionable material.

I believe it burns rather well too, just set fire to a pile of shavings and run away (upwind).

I'm pretty sure that most politicians irrespective of beards and towels are pragmatic enough survivalists not to want to turn their own countries into radiactive dustbowls. Stalin was as big a nutter as Hitler and would have jumped at the chance to annex Western Europe but he didn't as he wasn't suicidal. IMO

They didn't give a toss about consequences when the Iran-Iraq war was happening any more than suicide bombers do now. These people are happy to die for their cause(s) and won't give a shit if their country goes with them.
