Looking to go there on a business trip and any half decent hotel is at least 250 EUR a night. I know it’s a boom town but that’s more than London or New York. How can they justify those prices when, from what I understand, it’s almost a bankrupt economy?

I went on a business trip there 10 years ago and it was incredibley expensive
i guess they can pitch the prices high because thats the going rate and companys are paying it , simple supply - demand thing

There's probably a shortage of 'half decent' hotels.

Moscow can be cheaper if you are willing to use what the locals use. Public transport is allot cheaper for instance and far better than here.

check out the link expedia.co.uk

on average russian 3/4* hotels charge around 4,000 roubles per night 79 pounds or 117 euros

good hotels in Moscow average around 6000 roubles 119 pounds or 179 euros

I have stayed in SAS RADDISON 6000 roubles , great hotel highly reccommend probably the comfiest best I have ever slept in I have stayed in standard double ( must in moscow ) on 4 occasions
walking distance to Arbat shopping district ( hard rock cafe etc) and close to Red square 5 mins

Also Golden Ring 6000 roubles. great hotel next door to SAS , neare Arbat walking distance to John Bull English pub !!! and Hard rock cafe..............just watch out for the Hotel pros that sit in the bar in the evening .......they charge jonny foreigner up to 400 dollars an hour !!!!.....

alternatively Best Eastern Sovietsky hotel on the outskirts around 5000 roubles , owned by Stalin himself you will see portraits of Margaret Thatcher etc in the lobby all of which have stayed here , this is a typically traditional Russian Hotel huge rooms . high ceiings . I stayed there once ..........it has to be said the doorman speaks perfect English ...
There were 3 of us travelling from Siberia via Moscow to London after 6 weeks . The company put us in this hotel overnight .. We asked the doorman where the best night clubs were located.......he said stay here ........half an hour later a mercedes pulled up with 5 of the tallest lovely blonde girls I have ever seen ........yours for 150 dollars all night ..............

we looked at one another for all of 30 seconds ...........then attacked the cash machine

enjoy yourself

cheers

My old man has been a couple of times on business and I guess the money must go towards safety - there was a large man with a machine gun stationed in the lobby to protect guests from the local mafia!

Don't muck about with the John Bull, keep heading up the ring road, turn right onto novy arbat, cross the road use the under pass and into Molly Gwins. Walk in, shut mouth (jaw will have dropped by now) get a beer and enojy. Best chicken wings in moscow.

Although they are owned by the same group and the girls have swapped between the two occasionally, mollys is the place to go - especially at Halloween

Hmm, I quite like b2 its a more studenty fun place, or theres another place that I'm keeping secret where we went to with the Mollys girls for new years 2004/2005 - that was a damn good night - also where I've met most of my past russian girlies

I stayed in a hotel near kievskaya station and it was relaly, really cheap./ like £10 a night. It was very grim though. It reminded me of Max Payne. Oh yeah, and the water came out the showers/taps brown.

I think it is expensive to live like a "westerner" in Russia, to live like a russian is very cheap.

Yeah, the more expensive hotels like the Mariott Grand do have much better security than the cheaper ones, but I have stayed in cheaper accomodations in Moscow St. Petersburg, and in Kiev, and had no problems.

If you get out of the touristy part of Moscow, get out of the center a little, you can find much cheaper accomodations. And if you stay on the Metro, you can ride right downtown no problem.

And the girls....Kruchev certainly could have won the cold war by just giving them exit visas...
