What happened to tax relief?
Discussion
These tax reliefs had been gradually eroded by successive Chancellors from 1989 through to 1998/99. Once Brown got in, he decided that they were now worth so little that they could be safely discarded without too much political backlash. He was absolutely correct - hardly anyone noticed.
A form of allowance now exists for having children but it is not administered through the Tax Allowances system - instead, it is part of the cumbersome (and inefficient) Tax Credit system.
The old forms of Married Allowances still exist, but only for couples where one of the individuals in the marriage is 65 or over. The allowances increase slightly at 75.
I am not sure if these allowances have been modified to take into account the legal changes brought in by the new Same Sex Couples rules.

I remember my parents used to get tax relief on their mortgage (MIRAS) up to 2000, they also used to get extra tax relief for being married, which went at the same time.
Are there any replacements, or ways to stop paying so much of ones hard earned?
Simple you should be living in a council house(no need for MIRAS) and be a one parent as this is the new family.
Me and wife are not classed as a family as we have no children we are just a bank account for the government to draw on to support someone elses child.

I read something recently saying that a two parent/1 child family, with an income of £30k, mum staying at home is £1 better off a month than a single mother on benefit. It went on to say that the same family will pay £7k more a year in taxes than they receive in benefits. The single mother receives £5k a year more in benefits than shew pays in taxes.
