Nitrogen triiodide!
I didn't realise it was that sensitive, and I'm pleased that i've seen that video now as I was considering having a go at making some for a bit of fun... presumably if it's not dried out like that but in soln/slightly damp its a bit less tasty? Does anybody know?

lol how to make it from the young folks cyclopedia of games and sports circa 1890

Yep, just buy some aqueous ammonia (oven cleaner) and add iodine crystals to it, brown stuff is NI3. It's ok when it's wet but
dangerous when dry. NBr3 is a reddy brown highly explosive liquid and NCl3 is one of the most dangerous chemicals you can get, The bloke who discovered it lost an eye and 3 fingers!

I thought that the guy who lost his fingers/an eye was the chap making NCl3... the synthesis is the same but you substitute chlorine for iodine. The strange thing is he continued working on it... I would have stopped after one mutilation personally, but he carried on.
Interestingly for those of a chemical bent (That'll be love machine and pigeon then) NI3 is actually a complex of ammonia, either [NI3.NH3] or [NI3.(NH3)3].
You can make "naked" NI3 by reacting boron nitride (BN) with Iodine monofluoride (IF). The side product is obviously BF3. boranes stink, I dunno what fluorboranes are like but I imagine BF3 is fairly tasty too.

BF3 is used in neutron detectors as the gas in a sort of geiger counter arrangement. Boron has a high cross section for neutron capture and the reaction B-10 + n -> Li-7 + α produces alphas which are then detected by the geigeroid gadget. That's about all I know about it though
Nitrogen trichloride certainly stinks, and you can still smell it several days after actually being exposed to it. The smell is hard to describe but unforgettable. It's also a chemical which is largely responsible for our current level of electrical technology, since Humphry Davy blowing himself up with it was Michael Faraday's big break.

Me and my dad used to make this stuff when I was a kiddy. We used to leave it to dry on the patio in little mouse pooh size droppings and some would blow into the grass and when we were out there setting it off we would hear bits in grass going off.
I think one of my Great Uncles or Grandfather lost his hand (or part of it) in one of the wars using it.
