As with any of these type of emails , who knows if the report is true or not , but it sure does make sense

or in Bill Gates' case, rather than work hard developing a genuinely creative idea just steal one.
I refer you to rule #1
Love him or hate him, he's still a great business man. If the 'idea' was Windows, then he copied what was given to Apple (as it was deemed worthless). Blame Mr Jobs for trusting the wrong people, and not sorting out decent contracts with his suppliers.
If the idea was DOS, then wasn't that just a very shewd licensing deal and a lot of innovation?
Erm the lineage of Windows has little to do with his fortune.
That in the main comes from the licensing deal that states that if you sell a PC you HAVE to ship an MS operating system with it, previously MS-DOS now Windows of course.
Gates alone came up with that concept, he saw that the value was in software not hardware, its probably the most significant business deal ever...
The fact that his engineers pinched Xerox's idea via Apple is neither here nor there really.
Interestingly MS owns a core component of the Apple OS so whatever you buy, Bill gets a cut...

I thought he bought it off his neighbour, who was the idiot there?
and if windows is so crap and apple so good how come everyone still uses windows? (this is a geniune question not some inflammatory comment btw)

He has achieved a few things since then though I think.
Very true. He does have the monopoly on shit software.
Why the chip?
Microsoft software is ,without doubt, some of the finest stuff in the world.
The reason we find bugs in it is the incredible complexity. I believe that the current "Windows" operating system represents one of mankind's greatest endeavours - if you count the phenomenal number of manhours that have gone into it.
If it was so easy to do - why aren't there competitors bringing out fantastic new operating systems by the bucketload?. Linux probably represents Windows biggest competitor and that because of the vast number of (free!) manhours that have gone into it.
Whilst one should not confuse effort with quality or capability in software there is a strong correlation.
Another reason that MS stuff suffers "bugs" is that no two PCs are the same. The combination of hardware and software is unique. Given the level of control MS can exert over their end-deployment platform (i.e. NONE) its amazing anything works at all!
I, for one, am constantly amazed and impressed at Gates' firm's achievements.

Give him a break, one dodgy deal buying some of 'that Apple rubbish' and suddenly all of his software is sh*t.....
Not to mention one engineer driven to suicide : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Kildall

Probably not the best link, it is a well known rumour however. I would of thought inventing CP/M and having it stolen and seeing some other guy then go on to be a multibillionaire as a result would be depressing.

MS software is certainly not the finest - hence the number of errors it generates.
iirc a commercial airliner has more lines of code than windows yet you don't see them crashing all over the place.
i have servers that run for years at a time, we checked one last week which is closing on its 4th year of uptime. all our windows boxes manage a fraction of that uptime.
