Can someone recommend a good place to eat Sunday lunch time. I am thinking a nice country pub, or similar in town if necessary.

Many thanks,

Z

Try the King Harry - nice food in there.

Wicked Lady, Wheathamstead.

The Bull, Wheathamstead.

The Plough, Tyttenhanger (pretty much in S/A)

There is a very nice Pizzeria in the two centre, just on a corner. Can't remember the name though. Do an excellent Calzoni (sp?) foldover pizza

Yep, supposedly good food, haven't eaten there myself.

The pub is quite hard to find though, the easiest way is probably to head towards Hemel Hempstead from St. Michael's village, as soon as you exit the roundabout onto the Hemel road, take the left fork down a single lane road and follow that, you'll come to the Hollybush on your right after about a mile.

The Plough in Tyttenhanger that someone mentioned also has a great reputation but I've not been there either.

The Fox just outside Harpenden is very nice too, totally different atmosphere though. Very modern, lots of wood and chrome. Can be busy at lunchtime. The Silver Cup opposite Harpenden common does good food, sit down restaurant if you fancy going a little upmarket. Also, The Six Bells in St. Michael's village or the Fighting Cocks on Verulamium park.

God, I didn't think I ate out that much...

Oh, Sazio opposite the clock tower do a great lunchtime buffet for a fiver, Italian food. Don't be put off by the price, but I'm not sure if it's weekdays only.

That's my local!! The roasts on a Sunday are great. Another vote too for The Fox just outside Harpenden on the road to Luton.

The Sunday lunches at the Goat on Sopwell Lane and the Six Bells in St Michael's village kept dragging us back. Shouldn't be a problem with space in either of these.

There's an excellent, but often very busy, pub in Amwell called the Elephant and Castle. Worth trying to book there.

As for the Plough in Tyttenhanger, I've been there for a pint before Sunday lunch and it was absolutely heaving. Didn't eat there, though.

To be honest, since the parking restrictions in St Albans don't apply on a Sunday I'd suggest going into town. Don't bother with the Fighting Cocks, though - it's not as good as it used to be.

regarding my earlier post, here's a link to some descriptions of the brocket arms in ayot st lawrence:

www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/england/hertfordshire/herts5.html

and here's a quote from one of them to whet your appetite!

some website said:

A charming country inn enjoying perhaps the finest setting in the South East. This celebrated establishment (barely 30 minutes from London) will capture your heart: The Brocket Arms boasts a beautiful spacious walled garden, a fine array of real ale and a very reasonable menu renowned globally for it's fresh game. The landlord is a real character and guests return year after year.

As country pubs go, this is the real McCoy.

*Accommodation also available.

Another favourite of mine in the summer, especially with a segregated kids section . Usually a nice selection of exotica in the car park too.

Agree with you on the Fighting Cocks front too, I still like a drink in there though.

I would still like to drink in the Fighting Cocks as well - ideal for a walk from our old house in Camlet Way, through the park; stop for a pint at the Cocks; back through the park; pint in St Michaels

Moved away in November though. I don't miss the Thameslink but miss the pubs.
