Wirless TV antenna
Discussion
Hi all,
I have digital TV, freeview, in the living room and the front room. I know have a projector in the 'Cinema' upstairs. The trouble is I want freeview there too. So I got a digi box and got hold of a very good portable antenna, but its shite and cost me £40! So far I have tried 3 diffent antennas with no luck. As you can guess I dont have a TV Aerial socket in the room.
So what I am looking for is away that I can use the sockets from downstairs. I really want a Wireless TV Transmitter but I have had no luck finding one. The only ones I can see are the ones where you have to watch what is on the TV downstairs.
Come on PH dont fail me now!

That's your problem, right there.
Why not install a cable? You've already got an aerial that works (I assume). Putting a distribution box in the loft and running a cable shouldn't be that hard...
Wpuldnt I have to channel the walls and wallpaper?
Yeah, new aerial drop is going to be the easiest way.
Masthead amp and a splitter, drop the new cable down the outside of the house to the cinema.
You could, alternatively, replace the freeview box with a media centre downstairs and put an Xbox360 or Pinnacle Showcentre in with the projector and run Media Centre Extender.
New cable is easiest and cheapest though.

If you are in a modern home your upstairs walls will be batons and plaster board. Its relatively straightforward to get into the gap and run the cable down through it. Use a cable detector to work out where its got to and then cut in through the plasterboard and fit a socket.
There is an inevitable amount of making good you'll have to do, though. If you can't get the cable down through the gap in one go you have to cut holes in the plasterboard to access the cable - then put them back and fill/smooth/paint. If you've got paper on the wall then you *very likely* to end up needing to repaper if you can't get the thing down in one shot.
I'll just mention that I got my Father-in-law to help me out on a similar job. Do you have a DIY mate locally who could give you a hand? I'm not great at this sort of thing either. But the principle of the job ain't too bad.

I live in a 1940's semi! Bugger.
what i wanted to do was fit a new better aerial in the loft, drill a hole through the ceiling of the airing cupboard, a hole through the wall of the airing cupboard and into the bedroom and then fit the aerial socket thing on to it.
does this sound plausible..? i figured as long as the aerial (coaxial..?) is reasonable it shouldn't pick up interference from the workings of the hotwater tank timery things..
it would save me having to 'make good' walls and things...
(1930s end of terrace!)

This sounds like a plan! But I think the antenna wire goes down the outside of the house.
OH GOD! WHY IS NOTHING EASY!

If your house has cavity walls and it is an outside wall you can do it. I did it with a burglar alarm cable.
Make the hole in the wall for the aerial socket ensuring you break into the cavity. Measure where the hole is from a fixed point you can find. Drop a weight on a piece of string in at the top and find it at the bottom, might take several goes. Once found attach your aerial cable to your bit of string and pull through. Yours won't be too difficult as only going 6 feet or so down the wall!
