So what really did come first? Chicken or Egg?

I sat and thought about it last night, and am really stumped as to which did come first.......being a creature of simple means, I cannot come to any conclusion apart from I'm glad they exist as I like roast chicken and fried eggs......

ok...i accept that....BUT.......what did they come from? an egg originally or a little foetus type thing? and if so, where did that come from?
