Sketchy details at first but official figures are due to be released later today..

Since the new revised opening hours came into play, there has been a reported 5% downturn in drink related violence.

How do the doubters feel about this?

While never strictly speaking a doubter, I am forced to ask myself if I am prepared to believe government figures that point out what a good job they've done.

They've been talking about an 11% decrease in violent crime.
But, this was at the same time that the police got extra money (£2.5m) to help prevent problems. That has now been spent.
Remeber that these are statistics. We all know what the govt can do with them and a little creative spin.

That said, I'm of the opinion that little will get worse. I don't subscribe to the Daily Wail's view of an imminent Soddom & Gommorah because the local stays open till midnight...

It seems the low figures are partly due to increased prescence of police on the street for the initial phase of the new legislation. The Home Office freed up additional funds to pay for this. These funds have now expired and policing levels are now down to their normal levels. We will need to give this new situation at least a year to know its true impact on society.

I'd guess that they are simply re-classifying the definition of a violent crime to make it less.

Or it's true.

A chap who works here lives in Brighton and said just the other day how it's changed the place for the better - much less aggro, less pissheads, more relaxed nights out.

It works on the continent - I see no reason for it not to work here.

much nicer to sit and have a relaxed drink and leave when you want than be pushed out at 11:15pm with all the pissheads who are up for trouble

Good news. It was always going to take a few years for the drinking culture to change here, long may it continue.

I could always see the point of not chucking everyone out at the same time to fight over the kebabs and taxis.

I dunno if it will do anything to turn around the British culture of going out to get drunk to a more continental one of going out to have a drink.

I still wouldn't bother going to a city centre on a Friday night.

It may very well be true; but if this government told me it was raining, I'd look out of the window to check.

If this govt had anything to do with it it would be neither dry nor raining, the water would be hanging motionless in the air in an attempt to appease both the dryers and the wetters, it's the third way you know.

But these figures are supposedly from an independent source.

Tonker - my own sense is that it probably is true. I always thought it would go this way.

I'm not getting paid to believe it, I just do.

As has been suggested the figures will suggest whatever who's paying for them want them too.

I personally believe any difference the new laws make will depend entirely on what newspaper you read and what you choose to believe. So there.

Yep, the Mail said that it would result in evil radical islamic militant peadophiles on government handouts raping pensioners and protesting about cartoon characters used to promote binge drinking and fast food at the kebab shop whilst wearing suicide bombs and calling for death to the infidels at the ozzie bar and irish pub and calling for a public stoning of shaz & trace at flamingos not to mention the affect on house prices.
