My DVD player died last night, so I'm in need of a new one. I don't want to buy an expensive one yet - I'm waiting till the HD ones come out then splash out on a really good one.

Has anyone got any experience of the really cheap ones they sell for tuppence in supermarkets like Asda? Are they ok as a cheap stop-gap till the HD ones come out? Will they do multi-region etc.

Or are they all toilet?

Thanks

I bought a £30 yammata (or something like that) player a couple of years ago and have had no problems whatsoever. Take a look on ebuyer.com they do some very cheap DVD players. The only thing is that you won't be able to run a huge 5.1 home cinema system off one.

I've bought cheap and expensive ones in the past, and to be fair the cheaper ones have tended to last just as long if not longer

The basic parts in most players are generic. Its all down to whether you mind having an unknown brand under your TV. Get the cheap asda player as a stop gap and then in 2 years time you'll be starting another thread asking whether its worth upgrading

The Gf bought one a while ago for around £25 or so, worked brilliantly and has never failed. Not the fastest machine in the world, but still good.

Doesn't get much cheaper than this

No idea is they're any good bu the feedback is 4.5 stars so it must work OK. For £20, who cares if it only lasts 6 months.

I bought a £19.74 DVD from Asda, absolutely fine. Came with a 12 month no quibble guarantee. It goes tits up? So what?Back to Asda and get a refund, round the aisle and buy another.

What do you want for less than 20 quid?

Mine plays all formats too.

We have that one in our bedroom! It allows me to watch a Region 1 DVD of series 2- Battlestar Galactica, whereas the £280 sony 'all singing, all dancing, as long as its region 2 DVD player in the living room doesn't!

I bought one recently for around £30 quid. It works fine and even plays Region 1. Why buy an expensive one?

Same here - waiting for a HDD/DVD recorder with freeview, but not prepared to pay the current £300-£400.

So I got the Asda Dual DVD player for £40 - the one with the card reader slots on the front. Plays everything - VCD, SVCD, DivX, Xvid etc. etc. I also bought for another £40 a DVB USB dongle for the PC - that records in mpeg format and the Dual player plays them with no reformatting so long as the file size is under 2GB. There is a multi-region hack around for it, but haven't needed to do it yet.

£16.80 from Sainsbury corner shops (Bells for those in the know). Should have been £19ish but was on offer just before xmas. Plays perfectly well and has all the normal functions.

Got a £30 Phillips one from Tesco, made it multi region via the remote control.

It works, which is all I can ask for really...
