Years and years ago when I went to the States they had drive-thru ATM machines.

Last night was case-in-point when I wanted to pay in a cheque. Drive to bank. Park. get out of car. Go into bank. Pay in cheque. Get back into car. Drive off.

Surely a drive-thru ATM would solve most of my woes???

Thinking about it, they are a good idea, it is often very hard to park near a cash point.

So walk, you have legs, use them.

There was one in Acocks Green (a surburb of Birmingham), situated at a MacDonalds Drive Thru, where there was also a large car park (which to my logic defeated the purpose..... but anyway).

Not sure if it is still there or not, but I do know it was repeatedly broken into...

Yet another way of deconstructing an interactive society.

My main concern is the multitude of banal rants we'd have on here, with people saying "Do you know how long it took a Volvo to take out £10?!" or "Some blighter had the temerity to apply his handbrake last night" or "Why do people check their balance there? Don't they have the internet?" or "Some fool attempted to drive a TVR through one last night and created gridlock in Kidderminster"

my guess is because its cultural.

many amercia towns are widely spread out so doing your shopping isn't just a case of going to a high street. all the major shops in west pensacola are on one road - sounds easy but the road is about 4 miles long. the bank is just another building on that road, so it makes sense to save you the aggro of having to get out of the car once you get there.

Many town centres have no free parking spaces. Should I park up in a car park and pay in order to use a cashpoint.

Or you could adopt the ASBO society approach and park, illegally, on the pavement, with your warning indicators flashing, which makes it OK, blocking other legitimate road users just so that you can use the cashpoint.

I dont use drive thrus on principle (ATMs, McDonalds, Dry Cleaner, Chemist), none of em. I just get out the car and walk. Most convenience businesses have a drive thru facility, not just banks and fast food places.

Plus, as many people have SUVs and Pickups, the ATM buttons/card slot look set too high up to reach from my seat without half hanging out the car.

There is also the security aspect of it though, most people will feel safer using an ATM from their vehicle after dark than walking up to one.

I know some people have tried "Take-Out" ATMs in the UK. The problem is, you need a JCB and a whopping great chain to make the system work properly.

The best drive-thru I saw was the at the liquor store near the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green.
Good old Kentucky, huh!
