I was having a discussion today with work colleagues and together with reading some articles in a trade magazine from people in the same profession of myself I would like to pose the following questions to PH'ers.

1). What is the first image that comes to mind when you think of an Engineer?
2). What is an Engineer?

Thanks in advance

typical stereotype and totally not true but for some reason a bloke in blue overalls covered in oil and dirt and not the brightest.

(yes I know you get engineers in suits )

1. Brunell.
2. People without whom the world stops functioning at all levels. Underrated and undervalued.
(see above!)

But then I'm a little biased.

That could be a mechanic but not all are like that.

All my bfs, bar one, have been engineers, so it's a big from me. I think intelligent, querky (in a good way) and great analysts.

Since I'm doing an engineering foundation year at the minute (due to only having an AS level in maths), engineers so far appear to almost all be men.

That's a mechanic! Engineer: Plastic hard hat, white overalls, probably standing next to a large bridge and holding a clipboard or laptop.

Then again maybe I've seen too many corporate brochure images?!

That's a civil engineer.

I used to be one of the blue overalled 'shop floor' thicko's 'til I wised up and realised that being a highly skilled apprentice trained CnC/NC machinist/toolmaker was a mugs game and went into computers.

It wouldn’t surprise me if someone actually has that printed on the side of their van.
