the amount of mail that goes missing for me is rediculous! I wish they would do a better job.

So do I, but I can't see how taking money out of the operation is going to help.

In absolute terms, yes, it is outrageous.

However, a BBC report figures the stolen proportion amounts to just 0.001% of the 22 billion items processed anually.

I'm not saying for one second that the RM should rest on it's laurels, far from it but anyone with any experience of volumised distribution will attest to that figure, in fact, being a remarkable success.

Crozier is right to be pissed of at this fine.

I hate to have to defend them but....I ordered stuff on thurs, was dispatched fri, arrived this morning - all second class post too (now I've worked out why the P&P was so cheap )

But I have had instances where letters have gone walkies. Rather like a big lottery isn't it.

Does seem a lot of money to be fined though...

I had to send some job referances to Nottingham a few months back. I had to send them three times twice recorded delivery before they got them!

They should be fined 12 million for dropping red elastic bands in my garden every week.

Hmmm - I have had several items of mail stolen in transit before , with a "couldn't give a toss mate" response from Royal Mail - when someone ( in the sorting office ? ) had opened a parcel , removed items and then re-closed it the RM suggested "it must have got torn in the machinery" - bollox

The issue is that RM employ many seasonal workers without proper background checks ... which is how a dodgy Asylum seeker from Congo managed to nick £20m of cheques. They deserve the fine IMHO.

Stealing or tampering with mail in the USA is deemed a Federal offence with serious consequences ( jail ) - its about time the issue was taken seriously over here by the Post Office / Royal Mail.

Yup, how annoying is that? Every day there are another one or two left under the boxes in the lobby of my block of flats.

I assume you are first in the street?
We had the same problem. I devised a simple solution.
I gathered them all up over two weeks, it came to about 40-50 bands and hung them round the gate post that he has to use.
We have not had another one since.
