1) Depeche Mode - Gods
2) Gary Numan/tubeway army - favourite aviating nutter
3) Ultravox - Hymn ,The Voice,passing strangers,reap the wild wind
4) Kraftwerk - nuff said
5) OMD - all the early works
6) Human League - lots of the early stuff
7) Heaven 17 - cool
8) Jean michel Jarre - All the ambient early stuff
9) Talk Talk - fanbloody tastic

although not strictly electronica 'Killing Joke - a love like blood' was awesome tune too

and a quite a few of Thomson Twins tracks were cool....Howard Jones was also an Eighties colussus for me......no ....i'm serious ,listen to some of album stuff.....quality....

Yup - love them all.

You are right on one of the most influential and innovative:

Howard Jones.

Arguably the first to truly use sythesizers and digital audio technology as intruments in the turest sense, rather than as sound effect generators.

He's still going strong and I can thoroughly recommend some of his recent live albums which contain storming re-visited versions of his early stuff.


Early to mid period Erasure were awesome too.

I'd Suggest Bill Nelson as well, Started with guitars but has produced some stunning electronic and ambient work Starting with "Quit Dreaming....". John Foxx is nearly always forgotten, "Metametic" is a classic containg such as "No-one Driving" and "Underpass". Even Pete Shelley got in on the scene with "Homosapien".

Moving into the 80's would Pet Shop Boys come into this category? I think Disco was a great album (probably compilation but still great).

Excellent list, also applaud most bands with Vince clark ( Don't go with Alison Moyet has been my ring tone for years) , dare i say Erasure as well. Love those Moogs!
On a more modern take, how about Lemon Jelly ?

Alexkp......I saw Howard Jones (& Jed) on his first world tour at the NEC in the eighties.....a musical genius......liked his second and third albums especially......

Depends if you're mainly talking about electronica as electro-pop...

What about "electro" as in Man Parrish, Hashim, Nucleus, Davy DMX, Warp 9, Time Zone etc?
