I was going to work on Friday along the usual route, 9 miles of 30 and 40mph, the 40 used to be derestricted, the road was quite as i approached a left hander with a turning on my left just after it, i could see an artic slowing down(almost stopped) coming the other way, its open fields with very low hedges.
There was nothing behind me so the trucker would`nt have had long to wait but i was feeling in a good mood so i slowed down and flashed him to complete his turn, he waved a thanks and so did i, it cost me all of 7 seconds, he got out of my way and i accelerated, about 400 yards down the road was a right hand bend with continuous white lines, i got about 200 yards from the bend when suddenly a Astra came round the corner towards me on the wrong side of the road, when he passed me there was hell of a smell of burning rubber, he must of had a flat tyre.

If i had`nt eased off to let the truck make his right turn i would have been on that bend as the Astra came round.........Phewwwwwww.

I believe in fate.

I don`t know whats happened with those 3 W`s

Yes I believe things happen for a reason, but I don't believe things are predetermined. I believe there are 2 paths at any one junction and it depends on your choices as to which path you take.

Nope not at all.

I agree though, things like this happen, I was only talking about this with someone today. The way I see it, you had this experience today, but loads of other people probably did have a head on collision after letting a tractor out somewhere or other(not today necessarily I might add)... If you think about all the coincidences that could happen, millions and millions of them to each of us, but hardly any of them ever do, so it is really surprising when one of them actually does happen! And I think that some people must have more of these occurances than others!

No i dont believe in fate.

The reason being is that such a belief (as with religion) relies on nothing more than faith to explain the world around us.
It also implies that none of us has any choice in what befalls us and that our futures (that havent even happened yet) are somehow mapped out for us to follow.
Mapped out by whom though?
Such a belief is unrealistic and illogical and seems to suggest something of santa claus, the tooth fairy or jesus and the devil about it.

Believing in fate is no more sensible than believing in a god, and look how much trouble thats gotten us into.

This may sound a bit contradictory, but I believe in fate....to a certain extent.

I was recently having a conversation with a friend about this and we came to the conclusion that "fate" is not a narrow direct path, but is a general wide path, where you do have choices and descisions to make.

Take my life for example...."somebody" (ie. fate) said that I would grow up in the way I have, (from a PH POV) pass my driving test when I did, have a couple of accidents when I did, and let me walk away from those accidents unharmed. Why did fate want to put me through those situations?

However, I contradict myself here, because I believe fate but me in those accident situations. Without my most recent incident (just over a year ago) if I hadn't have had the accident, I wouldn't have taken and advanced driving course, and maybe have killed myself.

Sorry when i said fate i meant good fate, not bad fate.
If you decide to not go on that 200 mile blast round the north yorkshire roads at the crack of dawn because, well you don`t know why you decided not to go but something just did`nt seem right, under those circumstances you would`nt know whether you would have had a crash or not, but when that Astra came round the corner i could`nt help but think i was lucky, ok so i might not have been killed and maybe he could have pulled it back onto his side of the road.

But it makes you think.(well it made me think)

It's not believing in fate that is stupid...it's relying on it.

Maybe your fate is to die a horrible death..believing you missed death (eg your oncoming car) due to fate is just rediculous.

Coz next week you will be kidnapped by aliens and, after having been examined anally with a huge instrument, you will be covered in honey and given to the ant god

Not fate, chance. Every time you see a recent accident you can think 'If I'd left home 7 minutes earlier that could have been me.' One day it might be you; it's just chance. However you can improve your chances by driving sensibly (aware) and not like the bloke in the Astra!

I think there is a guiding force, call it fate, karma or just luck...

That isnt to say you dont make your own choices in life, when i met the missues it was purely through chance, and when we got to know each other, it seemed our paths had nearly crossed many times before...

So from that, I believe I was destined to meet her, but the choices we both make dictated when it actually happened...

No. It's all about probability.

Life is like a game of cards, some people get dealt a bad hand, other people are dealt a great hand. A bad player may be dealt a great hand but they may well lose, while a great player may start with a rubbish hand but win the game. It's all about learning to improve your chances, nothing's guarunteed but by making the effort to improve the probabilities in life you can make it much more likely you'll do well.

Hell, I believe in fete! We had a fete that raised several hundred pounds for my daughters school, to pay for food and books and stuff that the government don't cover. There were no car crashes or any of that wierd stuff you guys are on about though

Without being able to see into the future what will happen tomorrow will happen tomorrow, you've no control over it.

Can't see the difference between that and fate.

I dunno, I think there's something in it. I applied for the same 2 jobs at my company a total of 6 times and always got rejected. It made me really angry, but then my current job came along and I'm really happy doing it. If I'd been offered the other jobs I wouldn't have been able to go for this one.

The only certainty, the only fate is death, thats where the future will take us all.

Enjoy what you have now, while you still can.

Nope, not having any of this predetermined stuff. The future is unwritten - we make our own fate.
