when he was about 17 he was leaving a party with his then girlfreind and getting into her dads car (he was picking them up to take them home), he got in the back of the car and swears he felt someone else pressing and shoving against him as if also trying to get in too!, yet there was no one there

Baldrick: Yeah, well, when I was even littler, see, we used to live in this haunted hovel. Every night, my family were troubled by a visitation from this disgusting ghoul. It was terrible. First there was this unholy smell, then this tiny, clammy, hairy creature would materialise in the bed between them. Fortunately, I could never see it myself.
Blackadder: Yes… Tell me, Baldrick: when you left home, did this repulsive entity mysteriously disappear?
Baldrick: That very day…

God I hope this doesn't sound too preachy... :S

I've had not an encounter with a ghost, but an experience. Seems to be a pretty common one, happy joy joy feelings, brilliant burning tower of light, lots of smaller lights around it.

Wouldn't mind but I wasn't watching close encounters and I don't drink.

Other than "yeah, had weirdness happen to me" I can't offer him any advice; most of the avenues I've explored looking for help end in one religion or another.

Ahhh - that would be the annual gala opening of the Blackpool Christmas Illuminations.

Seriously though - assuming ghosts are troubled spirits still tangled in the mortal plane, how come they don't post on internet boards?...or maybe they do......do we have any PolterHeads, or, if you will, Pistongeists posting tonight?

See, solid proof that ghosts exist. That last one is a bit mad though, easily faked, granted, but it sends one of those shivers up my spine. I like those shivers.

There's plenty of explanations for ghosts but very little scientific evidence. A shame really, their existence is perfectly reasonable and quite clearly explained in some philosophyies, just seems that we haven't developed the tools yet to interract with them, so all we are left with is ghouly feeling sometimes.

Here's a funny story for you. Many years ago I was staying at my Sister's house in Somerton, Somerset. I was there with my then girl friend and all of us had just been for a steak dinner and a few ales at the White Hart pub.

At kicking out time my girlfriend spots the cemetary across the road and so myself and her head over a breather leaving my Sister and Brother in Law to walk home by themselves.

So, we're really starting to get down to it in a corner of this cemetary, it's a lovely summers night and under the circumstances I didn't mind getting a grassy ass.

She's bouncing up and down like a yoyo and between strokes I'm looking over her, out across this beautiful scene that is just starting to haze up a bit with some summer's early morning mist and I spot this figure wandering through the cemetary.

I begin to make a bit of an exclamation but she's got my arms pinned and she's swamping my attempts to talk with her hands.

Eventually it all goes soft and I do manage to draw her attention to a shadowy figure walking a small dog across the grass not fifty metres away.

The figure looked to be dressed in one of those really stereotypical old night shirts, the sort that reach right down to your ankles, the closest I can compare would be the type of thing you'd see Scrooge wearing in a pantomine.

We kept still, just watching until the figure (and dog) disappeared round the corner of the church.

To this day I have no explanantion, and I've witnessed other 'happenings' to leave me in no doubt that are are still many things that we can't explain nor understand.

Surely the obvious explanation is that it was some old loonie wearing a nightshirt taking the dog out for a cr@p?

I don't really want to believe in spirits but I did have a weird experience a few years ago here in Malaysia.

Ghosts or Hantus as they are referred to here are very common and around us all the time (apparently). Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore is rife with Black magic and bomohs (witch doctors). Black magic is widely accepted here as real. The police will take you seriously and investigate if you report to them that you think someone is using black magic on you. Many cases of someone using black magic appear in the newspapers.

My experience was a couple of years ago when I had broke off a relationship with a girl who didn’t want the relationship to end and she didn’t want to leave my house. Eventually she did leave and fearing for my safety (i.e pissed off Thai girl...anything could happen) I changed all the locks on the house. A week later when I got back to the house one night and went upstairs for a shower, something stopped me in my tracks. There was a pile of stuff in the middle of my bed, some of my money from the bedroom drawers - (coins, notes), books, clothes and other odds and sods.. I certainly didn’t put it there, no one has a key but me to the new locks..

After speaking to a friend, who is local Malay he told me he wanted to visit the house. After he did so he told me someone was using black magic on me and was using a Toyol to do it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyol

After this I never slept well at all in the house for weeks. I kept seeing movement in the corner of my eye every evening as I was sitting watching tv, reading etc. the feeling of something there with me grew stronger and stronger over the weeks. The feeling got so bad that I was feeling nauseous and I had to leave the house one morning at 3am when I awoke after feeling something biting my finger whilst asleep - I kid you not - it hurt. I stuffed a few things in a bag and left the house. I never went back and moved into to another place the next week.

Yes, I believe in ghosts..

Let's apply a little critical thinking:

Is it more likely that:

(1) you had an experience that requires the existence of phenomena which cause the known laws of physics to be substantially extended and/or altered and yet which have never been demonstrated in any peer-reviewed research at all, ever

(2) it was all in your head
