Hmmm, has someone at the performing rights society had crap service at Kwik Fit recently?

PRA make the actions of the average traffic warden seem very tame in comparrison. Mind you with music 'theft' all over the shop (so to speak) they feel an obligation to act. It will be an interesting story to follow

I don't understand this - surely anybody listening to a radio (where you are not paying to hear the music) counts as copyright infringement!? Or does the radio come with a "single user licence"? What about my car radio, do I need to purchase additional licences? If I have the roof down do I need to turn the radio off?

Ludicrous obviously, but what is the precedent for this?

It's a nonsense ruling but I absolutely hate Kwik Fit so anything that causes them problems is ok by me...

Call me a cynic but I suspect this may have a certain element of truth to it!

Utter madness - this happened at an ice cream kiosk on Gosport sea front recently - the chap in the kiosk was told he couldn't have his radio on because other people could hear it.

On the plus side though, if your neighbours p*ss you off at 3am in the morning playing loud music you can report them to the Performing Rights Society ! smile

It has to be said that if I worked there I would be jumping for joy in anticipation... one of the most eternally maddening things about working in a place like that is being constantly subjected to a continual barrage of shite from some ing crappy radio station all sodding day. I mean it's always possible to turn up early one day and give the insanity box a quick blast in the microwave but it's never long before some er brings another one in...

I don't think it is radios in this case, more likely it is cd players. CD's are licenced to the owner and are not permitted to be loaned or played to anyone else, it is the Radio station which holds the licence for anything it broadcasts, and anyone is entitled to listen to a radio broadcast.

(yes, i know the link says radio, but i think it is inaccurate)

Radio stations pay a license fee to broadcast to individuals.
If you are then using that broadcast in a place where customers can hear it you need a license as it is deemed you are using the music to benefit the customers who are paying you money.
It is a dodgy ground issue at best. If it is a restaurant then I can clearly see the benefit to playing music to customers. But in a garage is it the staff member or the customer who is benefiting from the broadcast.
I do not think customers choose or prefer garages based on the music on the staff radios.
If it is in a waiting are however, yes they should have a license.

I had the PRS call up about out our on-hold music.

Told them to censored off as I'd written it myself (which I had) - never heard anything more from them.

You're effectively broadcasting it, so yes you will.

And if you are like the knobs that drive around Wokingham so you can hear it from 2 miles away, I personally will welcome it yes

What a lot of silly old tosh. A woman in the USA is fined USD200,000 for sharing some tracks with people, and the best this lot can do is to investigate mechanics radios? Strewth, they need to chill out, grow up and get on with more serious things - er, like the internet...

they had a point with her though, and she decided to defend her actions rather than take a slap on the wrists.

No it's radios as well. If you play the radio in your place of work, if the "public" have access, ie a customer can come in, then you need a PRS licence & most likely a PPL one as well.

rolleyes - I got hit when I wanted a radio on in the background in the office...

Twunts the lot of them!

The garage I worked at always had Radio 2 on - much better than listening to the tripe in the charts. If you didn't have music while you're working in Kwikfit, you'd go insane... *whizz brrBANG whizzbrr 'that doesn't look right' BANG BANG brr*

How about if I buy a CD, and put it on in my car, with passengers I've never previously met? Is that breaching the terms?
