Apparently it was out of date.

Sadly I suspect this means no life insurance pay out for his family.

Can it get any worse?

Doesn't mean he's suddenly forgotten how to fly though, does it?

I can't imagine they would have any financial worries over that. Did he even have life insurance? I'm not sure that if I was worth £millions I'd bother.

Strange oversight in any case.

It probably also depends on why the holicopter went down?

Coming next:

Helicopter overdue service, previous one indicated future gearbox failure, probably over sharp, killing copse of trees rather than a large carefully placed mattress.

Trees actually supposed to be cut down and replaced with barn full of soft hay.

Honestly.....

Isn't the licence only needed over non private land?

he was in his own back yard when he crashed???

Bit like driving without a licence on your land... or is it not the same as that?

Life insurance wouldn't have been affected would it?? Covering accidents and death and not how??

Going to come down to when the policy was taken out, whether he was already a pilot. If he took up flying after the policy was put in force the family may be in the clear, however the small print in the policy may well say "if you are doing something illegal when you die, we wont pay." And if his license was out of date, he'll have been flying illegally.

I think that the problem if the insurance is invalid for any reason is not so much the loss of any pay out to the McRae family but to the families of the passengers.

Would Colin McRae even get life insurance? I imagine it would be rather a strained conversation with the underwriter when he explained he was a helicopter piloting professional rally driver.

Don't really see how it would affect them, although children are (usually) unlikely to have life assurance policies.

Exactly my point.

McRae was a wealthy man. The other family perhaps not so.

yes

If it does come to pass there is unfortunately likely to be some very serious moral Vs.financial dilemmas for some families.

Are you having a laugh? You don't own the airspace over your property, the idea of a licence is so that you don't go flying into other people, my house is under one of heathrows flight lines by your logic I could merrily go up and play dodge the jumbo or maybe I should be charging them for it.

I would imagine the other family have some recourse, in the same way as if it were a car accident.

However I do wonder if the other guy's life insurance (asuming he had any) would cover him - standard policies only cover flights as a fare paying passenger. If you're flying in a private aircraft then you need to delare that - I had to when I got mt mortgage life assurance, as Mrs DL's Dad & brother hold PPL's and they used to have their own (not so) little aeroplane. There was no additional premium though.

Precisely. Colin's estate(ie his widow) may have to pay out to the estates of the two non family members that died.

iirc This is similar to what happened to Graham Hill.
