With the onset of winter and hibernation moods... time for FA to try something new again! Have always fancied “having a stab” at fencing as it looks good fun. I need to keep my “motor skills” honed over winter as in, reaction time, balance, spatial awareness, coordination, memory etc and fencing looks to be a great all-round cardio workout and can be done indoors. It actually looks fun too.

Has anyone tried it? Is it a fun thing to do? Never having picked up a weapon (not that type anyway) in my life... is it easy to learn........... AND..........

Does it hurt when you get stabbed??? crythumbup

Thanking you in advance...

It is fun, but a bit too poncey and regulated for my liking.
It wont hurt as such but you might get a few tender spots when the adreneline has stopped later on.
Oh.. and the white suit will make your bum look big.

Wow... it sounds fantastic... :boing: MUST DO MUST DO. Thank you for the linky as I can't find a club near me so will have to travel out of county I think for it...

Ouch... adrenaline stays in the body for 6 hours after an event so hopefully I will be asleep... doesn't bode well for getting up though the next morning eek

And oi... at least it will be the suit and not me laugh besides if I really get into it will have to have a bespoke outfit made - don't mind looking poncy but I will have to at least look good and poncy biggrin

It is great fun. I did it for about 5 years although I only got to 3 star as I didn't practice enough. It only hurts if you knock the button off your opponents epee and then you get stabbed by the sharp bit eek or as on one occassion I hit my opponents foil a bit too hard and it broke in two with him still lunging.

I could never get on with fighting women though, as they have protective plastic covers over their breasts and the sound of hitting them meant you knew exactly what you had hit. wink

unbelievable - Mrs Orange and I were booked on a fencing course which should have started in september - cancelled due to lack of numbers!

Where were you last month? tongue out

I tried this out a few years ago - superb fun but VERY physical.
I think a lot of the 'fun' element will depend on your instructor, and the person with whom you are partnered.

Of course it doesn't hurt you big baby... until you progress to the sabre of course. hehe

I did a beginners course a few years ago and loved it.

I fenced from the age of about 7 till 19 at local and national level (mainly foil with some epee). It's a great sport, something I've been wanting to get back into. Personally I enjoyed fencing foil more than epee. Epee is a very different discipline to foil and due to the legal target area can be quite difficult to master.

It doesn't hurt getting hit by a foil at all, epees at full tilt into your thigh, knee or anywhere boney will sting a bit (and bruise). I only fenced sabre in training (never competed) and can recomend it, just make sure you keep your balance hand out of the way. Having you knuckles opened up and giving away a point isn't much fun!

Tried it once, wasn't bad at it but never got the change to try it again.

The things it teaches you about self-defence and how to handle a weapon are valuable too. Keeping the sword under control and attacking with the minimum movement whilst minimising the surface area of your body open to attack from the other guy is quite an art.

A few other people go in there hacking and slashing like a maniac and they always lost out very quickly as it was all for show.

yes Should learn to fight with a proper sword rather than a pansy foil. Learn to fight with a bastard sword or even a viking battle axe. Then if it goes seriously wrong you can end up with a broken arm or ribs.

Hi there,

I highly recommend it. Been doing it on and off for about 10 years and got quite good while still at school. If you go to a club, they will probably suggest you learn with a foil rather than an Epee as this tends to be the usual 'beginners weapon'.

I liked foil, and continued to compete in that weapon for years and only took to Epee fairly recently. Neither are that sore to be honest but as Epees have a stiffer blade and a much thicker metal barrel on the tip, you sometimes get moments whereby you come forward just as your opponent lunger, the blade jars on your chest and you get a top notch, perfectly circular bruise!

On balance though, this will be unlikely as a female as you will be given a chest protector.

Great fun though - hope you enjoy it!
