What is the Round Table club all about?
Discussion
Rotary and Freemasons are pretty well known and 've got a fiarly good idea of what both clubs are about, but I got chatting to a guy in our local recently who is a member of the Round Table. I've checked out their website and it's a club for men who want friendship. Sounds pretty dubious to me. I don't expect they're a bunch of shirt lifters, but what is this club all about and has anyone here been a member?
My parents were very much involved in Round Table and Ladies Circle years ago. (LC is for the wives / partners of RTers).
They are charitable organisations, raising money for various causes. There is also the social side of it too, with a fair fiew dinner dances / functions / area rallies etc throughout the year.
You can join at 18 and have to leave at 40, you can then join 41 club ( which is basically ex Tablers carrying on the fund raising / drinking tradition
Round Table is basically the same as Rotary from what I recall.

My parents were both heavily involved with Round Table and Ladies Circle. As kids it was great as we got to do all sorts of stuff with our families and others. They did lots for charity and had lots of social events too! My mum and dad had everyday jobs-driving instructor and housewife. There was a real mix of people from what I can remember.
Certainly wasn't any swinging in the Round Table I joined - but perhaps I joined the wrong one!
I left over 10 years ago on age grounds and generally I found it a very worthwhile club to join. Think of the Boy Scouts but with beer and you get the idea!
True, it was mainly populated by accountants & bankers but we got to meet people who would not otherwise have been in our social circle. All Tables have a Charter number - ours was 26 - and clubs take each and every opportunity to meet other 'Tables' where the objective is normally to eat and drink to even greater excess than on the last outing!
Fundraising was great fun, Cardiff Table ran a large firework display in the castle and there was a 'Christmas Float' which involved a short straw to be drawn for the member who would don a Santa suit and be towed at breakneck speed around the local housing estates giving out sweets and collecting money. - but again the objective was to route via known friendly households where tots of Scotch would be on offer.
Watch out for 'mouse racing' nights - That's a code for an event where some girls are engaged to do quite naughty things!

I tried my local Round Table for a year or so, and being single it was a fair way to get out and do some other things, have the odd meal out etc. Most of them were perfectly amicable and after a year, when they were looking for a new Treasurer, I volunteered. So I got a big red ring binder and a carrier bag full of receipts to take home...
Examining how things were done, it was patently obvious it was being run in a ponderous way and I wrote to the RTs bank manager telling him what I proposed. However, instead of dealing with me on a one-to-one basis, he went back to the Chairman, no doubt to complain about this 'upstart'. Well I can't work like that, so the next meeting, I went in, dumped the red file and carrier bag on the table and never went back.
And that, folks, is how Barclays Bank got its rhyming slang nickname. Truly a wunch of bankers.

I don't however advertise myself as only associating with men for friendship. They do labour this men only point a lot, hence my comment.
Most of my group were married. The activities simply gave them a break - otherwise it woudl be the same as any other club/group. There was also a 'ladies circle' where the wives got together to do things as well. So no sign of homosexuality I'm afraid. It's a bit like saying 'Boys who go to public school have had forced sex with the head boy'. Complete rubbish.52classic said:

52 Classic, Cardiff Table eh ? My Dad was chairman of Cwmbran Table and Area 4 Chairman back in his Tabling years. Now a member of Cwmbran 41 Club. I think Cwmbran Table has diminished somewhat with regards to members but still meet at the Carpenters Arms in Coed Y Paen I left over 10 years ago on age grounds and generally I found it a very worthwhile club to join.
