A total disgrace IMHO.

What possible "scientific" research can be done by killing these beautiful and intelligent creatures?

You know, on one hand, I agree with the whale lovers, but on the other hand, as creatures at the top of the food chain, we have an inherent right to devour everything else.

It's just the way things are. So I kind of respect how the Japanese go out and slaughter the whales without much care about what the rest of the world thinks. The are far more important things in this world to get all huffed up about.

If lions became so rampant to the point where a pack was hunting down the last colony of gazelles, do you think they'd give a hoot? They'd just wipe them out, and then look for other food.

It's just grub at the end of the day.

I don't see any real difference between eating whales and eating pigs, they're both of pretty equivilent intelligence, and at least the whales have a nice life until they are hunted, rather than spending their entire time in wallowing in shit in the inside of a factory farm.

We went on a whale-watching trip in South Africa on our honeymoon. Whilst there are plenty of boats that do shark-watching, only one company was licenced for whale-watching, and one of the conditions of their licence was that they had agreed to assist scientists who were studying the whales.

We went out on this great big Zodiac-type boat which had 4 forward-facing "seats" where you straddled a padded beam and held onto the handle in front of you, and a side-on double bench down the middle. For some reason, the people on the benches were all feeling rather seasick by the time we got out to the whales. We stopped to look at the whales, and just as the bench-dwellers started to recover their composure, the guide yelled out "research time", before grabbing a bucket and reaching over the side to shovel up a huge load of whale poo floating past the boat for the scientists to analyse! laugh

I think the problem is that we dont really know how many whales there are left of the various species, whilst i tihnk pigs are fairly safe from extinction these days.

Lions will never wipe out all the gazelles because of the natural balance of the food chain/ pyramid thories. It only goes wrong when there is an outside influence.

Wheras we may have the ability to catch and eat anything I dont think we should go for the less
abundent species when food is readily available from other sources.

eating whales as such isn't wrong. hunting an animal to extinction just because you want to is wrong though. we might be the top of the food chain (when we have our technology) but that infers responsibilities as well as rights. killing a species because you can is no better than that kid killing the dog with an airgun. besides its hardly a painfree way they kill them is it?

i think its time we bombed japan again, people have no more right to exist than any other species. any species that has the ability of thought who cant understand that is a very poor species in my eyes & it needs 'modifying'.

Oh don't get me going on Pandas.....they are quite clearly a species selected for extinction, so quite why we're so obsessed with stopping nature running it's course I don't know.

The stupid things can barely even eat enough bamboo to stay alive, let alone get around to mating.

Quite surprised people would actually condone whale hunting for food and even compare it to pig farming!

There's a world of difference between the method of timely dispatch affected on the little piggy compared to the drawn out "harpooning to death" method used for whales.....isn't there?? It doesn't look right humane anyway.

anyway, does anyone have any detailed info on what scientific research is being done on the whales....we already know smoking kills you, the pack of beagles told us that. And I can't see them being able to test cosmetics on em, they don't even have eyelashes or lips.

I wouldn't have a problem with controlled whale hunting provided they used a more human method of catching and killing the things! Same with the killing of seals. I don't have a problem with them dying, it's just the clubbing to death bit i find unncessary!

A pathetic excuse, scientific research - to what end?

Any animal which may be endangered should not be hunted and should be protected, and it is mans role to do so IMHO.

Personally, I would happily order the Royal Navy to blow the Whaling ships out of the water.. Accidents do happen.....
