X Box 360 vs PS3
Discussion
Hi guys,
I'm guessing this is a repost but I'm considering spending a bit of my left over xmas money on either an xbox 360 or a ps3.
At the moment I'm veering towards the Playstation as this year my two fave gaems are being released on it. Grand Theft Auto and Gran Turismo.
One of the problems I have is that I don't have a HD TV, so, is it possible to use one on a standard analogue TV?
What sort of prices are second hand ones going for at the moment and which would you recommend?

There are far less 'platform exclusives' this generation of consoles, so loads of the games are coming to both the PS3 and 360. One of these being the new Grand Theft Auto.
The PS3's format Blu-Ray could be seen as 'winning' now so that might sway you. Also, there are still a few reasons, in terms of games, that might sway you. Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PS3 will be awesome. But generally, the 360 has a better library of games at the moment.
Your analogue TV will be fine, but dont expect your games to be shown to their full potential.

Last year it would have been the xbox. This year, u should buy the PS3.
Never had a technical problem with my playstations, and although the xbox is really good, its had several problems and breakdowns.
I'd buy the PS3 now. And get yourself a decent tele.
Thats only with the old ones over heating.Never had a technical problem with my playstations, and although the xbox is really good, its had several problems and breakdowns.

The new ones have a new cooler chipset that doesnt. You can tell if you have the new chipset by checking the wattage on the power supply. If its 175w then its the new one.
It depends what you will use it for. If purely for games (which is likely since you lack a HD Telly) I would say the XBox360 is your best bet, due to a greater selection and better online service.
If you want to be able to play HD movies as well then give serious consideration to the PS3 instead.
Price is not much of a consideration anymore following cuts in the price of the PS3. The XBox360 has been more unreliable. But the newer models supposedly are far better after eliminating overheating problems.

I'm not going to recommend either - both have advantages over the other, although in terms of graphical power there really isn't much in it. The PS3 comes with a cable and scart connector that will allow you to connect it to a non HDTV - ours is hooked up to our 36" CRT with this. When you buy an HD telly you'll need an HDMI cable, but please spend some decent brass on one that is 1.3 compliant - it may also say "Compatible with PS3", as the cable I bought did.
If you are choosing a PS3, I would also look at second hand values of the earlier 60GB versions as opposed to the newer 40GB ones, but not for the larger hard disk (this is easily upgradeable, and does NOT affect your warranty). The earlier drives had more USB ports on them and offered compatibility with earlier PS2 games, which the later model does not.
Having said that, I was at Microsoft yesterday and saw PGR4 on a huge HDTV. It looked incredible....
Good luck!
Xbox 360
Pros: Lots of fantastic games NOW, great online.
Cons: DVD format may prove restrictive in the future, noisy.
PS3
Pros: Fantastic graphics, HD blue-ray player.
Cons: Emotion chip not suited to gaming (AI, etc.), online element not as involving as live.
Wii
Pros: Lots of fun and cheap, great party piece, good for non-gamers
Cons: Lack of proper 'hardcore' titles, poor graphics and no online element worth noting.

My wife bought me a PS3 for Christmas (i'm only 49)!! She was told that the older 60 gb models had problems. The new 40gb version is not backwards compatible but a patch will follow to make it so. Don't know the truth in this but I have no PS2 games anyway. I am amazed at the quality of the graphics especially Assasssins Creed.Having said that, I was at Microsoft yesterday and saw PGR4 on a huge HDTV. It looked incredible....
