Anyone give up smoking recently?

I'm feeling a bit smug because I gave up at the new year, and not even had any nicotine gum for a fortnight now. biggrin
I think I may've cracked it. Just the rest of my life to go now ...

That's what my father did...

Just stopped...

After forty years and one world war....

Strange how some people can, some can't....

Yup, gave up in November, with the help of Zyban. Seemed to have cracked it too smile
Smoked on and off for 30 years (mostly on), giving up was a bit of a non event after the first week or two, for me it was pretty starightforward once I actually believed it could be done

Good on ya.

It was my intentions to give up, but i emmm... "forgot"

I have however cut down a lot. From about 20 a day, to 5 a day. Sometimes going a few days in between without even 1.

I think i will give up for good soon. Just a case of chosing a date rolleyes

I am just over my first year of giving up. I found the first month really hard (went cold turkey from the outset rather than using quit smoking-aids) but otherwise it has been relatively easy. Good luck to those who have quit in the last month.

Stopped NYE 2006 and lasted up to 12th March when I got a phone call from a woman who had just seen one of our cats get run over and killed, 5 minutes away from where I was.

Can't say I was a good state when I arrived, so she offered me a fag... frown

Tried again this NYE and thought boocks to it a few days later.

Approaching 3 years without, after 25 years of smoking. I can't imagine WHY anyone would smoke, it just seems mental to me now. But I know if I smoked one I'd smoke a pack and then it'd all start again.

Put on a stone or more. Went on a diet but drank more alcohol. Trying to cut back on alcohol so...

It's tough being a grown-up. Maybe I need a fast car???

Gave up after 23 years. At the time I couldn't imagine life without a cigarette, but knew I had to give up because it was killing me.

Now, two years later, I can't imagine life WITH a cigarette. I'm also the world's worst ex-smoker for moaning about others. Fecking love it though! biggrin

Was supposed to give up on Jan 1st but postponed a couple days. Went well until I had a couple over the weekend just gone, but not had any since Monday night now and not planning on having any more, but when drunk, another part of my mind takes over and allows be one or 2. With this being Six Nations season and a 4 day lads trip to Dublin, I might faulter once or twice again frown

Off them from 30 a day since Jan 18th last year. So far I've had a smashing holiday out in the Far East, and still got a bundle of cash left over.

Quit for 5 years once, it was really really scary how easy it was to take it up again. That money I put into a personal pension, so rather than me paying out to HMG I actually made something on the tax breaks.

Keep at it - I was doing that too, don't allow yourself that concession of thinking - "I'll only smoke when I've had a few drinks" - That was the downfall of one time I tried, as I then looked for excuses to say - "I've had a drink, I can smoke now". I've realised now, that if you're going to give up, then its all of nothing...

The best advice I ever recieved was actually written on another giving up fags thread on here. It was to visualise the craving as something living inside you that would die without nicotine, to visualise it withering away was a powerful motivator.

Just out of interest, did your doctor tell you that Zyban is an antidepressant?

I smoke when I drink, thats all its weak but I always want one and have one, or more.

But its because I choose to, I like the rest of my imediate family could just stop and start very easily.

My dad used to smoke 40 b&h a day for 20 years. stopped. got a divorce then smoked an obscene amount for about 4 months then just decided to stop again..

Well done you. You just have to keep remembering smoking is what teenage girls and pikeys do.

We (myself and the Mrs) gave up for 12 months whilst she was pregnant. In recollection, it didn't seem that hard, but trying to motivate ourselves for the next give up seems almost impossible.

In fact I'm just going to nip outside for a quicky before bed.

Terrible isn't it.....
