Guys

Does anyone know of any legislation that prevents fibre optic cable being disposed of in an ordinary skip (i.e. ending up in landfill)?

One of our engineers has a large pile of fibre after a strip-out at a customers premises and he has posed the question.

Cheers

Officially, you need to get a WEEE company to take it away for you. It should also be ROHS compliant or it will cost more to get rid of.

In the real world, throw it in the skip and nobody will bat an eyelid. In fact the WEEE company will probably just do exactly the same.

ETA

ETA, just thought of another solution, coil it all up nice and neatly and put it on a pallet or something in the car park so it can be seen from the road.

It will be stolen within a few hours! smile

Not true anymore Im afraid, it is all very strictly monitored with audit trails of its diposal. Beeter to follow the correct routes and avoid problems. There are lost of licenced companies that deal with WEEE.

I do wonder about the guy down my road who runs a glazing company from his house - has a skip perminantly on the pavement full of broken glass. Nice for the local kids. Still, I put up with it in the hope some of the neighbourhood cats might find something interesting in there.

As you were...

I know a little about WEEE & ROHS, surely these relate to equipment only & not actual fibre optic CABLE?

WEEE covers the following

Large household appliances
Small household appliances
IT and telecommunications equipment
Consumer equipment
Lighting equipment
Electrical and electronic tools
Toys, leisure and sports equipment
Medical devices
Monitoring and control equipment
Automatic dispensers.

remeber the person enforcing this will be a nu-labia dependant revenue collecting scrote.

So you can bet your bottom dollar they will include cables of any kind in the "IT and telecoms equipment" category, in fact all the categories are pretty vague.

As an aside If you buy Cat5e or Fiber cable these days its got a little ROHS compliant label on the packaging. so I'd assume they were classified in the WEEE legislation by default as the two are so closely linked.

Just thought of another option, take it all home and stick it in your wheelie bin! wink
