I don't like jumping to conclusions but it does sound like he was just vandalising the wall!

If he's the type to vandalise anything at all then he deserves everything he gets. You might not think it matters if it's on a building site, or whatever, but I doubt he'd make a disctinction between that and something on private property that costs its owner a month's wages to fix. Having had literally thousands of pounds worth of damage done to property by vandals, and incured the apathy of the police towards any crime that doesn't guarantee a financial gain for the treasury, all I can say is that I only wish he had been headbutting the wall.
