Airbus A380 - Why the big desire to fly on it?

I mean its the biggest and thats a novelty but why this big 'wow!' about travelling on it?
If you're in economy you wont have any more legroom or seat width than you get on a 747 (Qantas & Singapore I've seen so far)
It will take a lot longer to check in, deal with baggage and administer 500 people on to a plane
It will take forever to get on and off
And you're a guinea pig as these arent exactly established.

I flew back to the UK on it last week and back out here again on an old 747.
Pros:
More space
Newer comfier seats
Better screen
USB connection to play media from a stick (impressed with this)
SA microsoft office built in (this is all in economy BTW)
Free A380 playing cards so you can tell everyone you've been on the "NEW A380!!!!!!"
Cons:
Longer checkin
Longer waitting for bags
More senior staff (from what I observed...)
Fuel pumps have a habit of failling
Pros:

was really looking forward to the first flight on the plane with singapore airlines going business class. the seat is far too big couldnt reach both sides at same time felt like a dwarf! had a cup holder on the left hand side which was were the window is so couldnt comfortable sit looking out of the window, plus strange feeling during turbulence that your ever so slightly behind the acion made me feel quite ill really.

Like most modern airliners, the interior fit of the passenger cabins will vary from airline to airline. At the moment Singapore Airlines is the only operator so the only experience passengers will have of the A380 will be with them.
It's a bit premature to decide whether the A380 experience is worse or better until there are quite a few mnore in service.
The Singapore A380s don't carry spectacularly more passengers than a 747 so I wouldn't think that it would have a massive affect on their check-in times.

Can I just ask, why is it that whenever people talk of the numbers of seats on the A380, a number of around 500 gets talked about. Hoever, the 747 carried more than this(527 killed in Japan's worst airliner disaster in a 747). I thought it was gonna be nearer 800.
