We had our car stolen when we had our house burgled last week.

They took the car keys and spares.

The car has been recovered, but no keys.

The insurance company is saying they limit claim for lost or stolen keys to £350. The cost of changing the locks, new keys etc is approx £900.

The policy summary does say they limit claims for lost keys, but they say it applies to stolen as well.

We are appealing this, but it is worth warning you that Zurich Insurance have these odd clause, in case you are insured with them.

Isn't there a difference between lost and stolen then?

Apparantly the policy says there's a limit for "lost" keys not "stolen" ones....

Clearly no-one can really comment without seeing the exact wording of the policy. For instance, my Admiral policy states that if keys are nicked from somewhere other than in the car (so my kitchen table, for instance) then the policy will pay out £100 towards changing the locks. But you're not (seemingly) covered at all if the keys are in the car.

So they only give you enough to get new keys made and have to deal with a claim a few weeks later for the whole car because it's been stolen again??

can you get it stolen again but this time by thieves who are better at hiding the car?

After a cursory google for Zurich Comprehensive Car Insurance policy

http://www.zurichinsurance.co.uk/insurance/carinsu...

Section 5 Accidental damage cover (for some reason)
We will also pay up to £350 to replace car locks if you lose your car keys or lock transmitter, or your keys are stolen.

Oh.

The brokers have said its an unsual limitation, most companies don't have it.

Incidentally, our keys were hidden at the back of a drawer.

At a guess, Id say they went through the drawers / cupboards until they found something that took they're fancy.

They turned the house upside down looking for keys for the deadlocked front door, so they could nick our TV's, laptops, xbox etc. They couldn't find the key,so they opened it with a hammer instead.
